<p>I took the practice SAT writing sections from SAT May 2013. Here are the questions that I don't understand (the answer). The brackets are the underlined parts. May I ask for an explanation on why my answer is wrong and the correct answer is right?</p>

<p>PARAGRAPH:
(1) If you have never had braces. it might seem strange to fantasize about the day you do not have to haul toothbrush. toothpaste, and rubber bands around in your backpack: there it is- my dream. (2) My braces have caused me to behave in ways I never could have predicted. (3) I sit quietly by while all my friends socialize in front of foods that I can no longer eat. (4) I also adorn my teeth with what looks like colorful tooth decorations. (5) Braces can improve your health as well as your appearance.</p>

<p>(6) The stories about pain and suffering, like Frankenstein, thai we read in English class have become relevant to my experience. (7) After my monthly braces- lightening sessions al the orthodontist's office, my inevitable headache makes me sympathize with the terrible pressure John Proctor feels in The Crucible. (8) This may sound pathetic to you, but ibuprofen is my best friend.</p>

<p>(9) In addition to food deprivation and pain. I worried about my appearance when I started wearing braces. (10) What made me feel better was finding out that actor Tom Cruise started wearing braces. (11) Even though he can afford expensive special braces, it takes courage for
a star to admit to a physical flaw. (12) As our rewards. we'll both have beautiful smiles when these things finally come off.</p>

<p>(13) Actually, a mouthful of steel is not so bad when I can impress everyone with bands of color on my teeth. (14) Still, all can think about is pure. blinding white. (15) I dream about having nothing in my mouth but old-fashioned teeth.</p>

<p>For question 10, your choice is wrong because you need a verb before selling like is/was; selling is not a verb but a gerund.</p>

<p>For question 20, the event being described occurred in the past and you can see this from the use of “became” toward the end of the sentence. Therefore, A needs to have a past tense verb (either simple past or past perfect) as opposed to the present perfect tense verb (has been).</p>

<p>For Question 10, I thought that “[each of which sells] mainly clothing. expensive jewelry, and unusual furniture” is a modifier phrase, so it is okay to put a gerund… I still don’t understand it. </p>

<p>For Question 10, I understand why the choice (A) is correct, but not why my answer (C) is wrong. I believe that (C) is also correct because we could say “each selling …”, to describe the stores, when we ignore the prepositional phrases</p>

<p>You can say each of which sells OR each of which is selling OR each selling. The “of which” creates the need for a singular verb afterward. With "of which,"the clause after the comma no longer is modifying “the two department stores” but the action of each individual store. </p>

<p>Aloe vera is a succulent [plant from whose leaves are extracted] a gel that has been prized since ancient times for its medicinal properties.</p>

<p>Correct answer is B because the helping verb ‘are’ is referring to the gel and since the gel in the sentence is singular, the pronoun that modifies it should also be singular. Thus, the correct pronoun is ‘is’.</p>

Pusat Shrade, can you explain the structure of “Aloe vera is a succulent…” for me? I don’t understand why the helping verb is referring the gel but not “whose leaves”.
