Questions heard during college tours

I think kids who live in the dorms are allowed to bring hunting rifles to school, but they have to be locked up in the security office and checked out when a kid wants to go hunting. S1 left his at home until he got an apartment.

Priceless NW tour guide video! Thanks!

Mom in a full auditorium asked if there was a bar on campus or would her son have to go to town for alcohol. It was plain she wanted Jr to have a convenient bar. The adcom actually stuttered for a moment before answering.

I wasn’t planning to go on any tours, but now I can’t wait!

D1 was one of several students who participated in a Q&A session during Freshman Orientation. Half way through the session, a Mom raises her hand and asks the panel, “Is marijuana legal at this college?” Dead silence in the room and the panel is ready to burst out laughing. Finally one of the kids tells her no, marijuana is as illegal here as it is anywhere else in New York state!

This wasn’t so much a question, but one mom on a tour would not shut up about how she “knows one of the admissions counselors.” Whatever the tour guide said, she would have to contradict it: “Well, we KNOW one of the admissions counselors, and HE said…” By the end of the tour, the whole group had headaches from rolling our eyes so much!

This wasn’t a question but a hilarious situation- was at son’s info session at Yale. The first part was a session led by students for prospective students only. As one of the HS students entered the room, his mother followed him. The Yale student politely asked her to remain outside. Mother answered “but I never go anywhere without him”- Yale student told mother that now would be a good time to think about how to let the son be on his own. I felt bad for the kid, as a lot of us parents were right there.

Omigosh: I can’t help but think I’d yell out “Shut the h*** up!” to some of the parents in some of these examples!

I’m too old to let idiots reign. I wouldn’t be embarrassed to say it too.

(Although my DD would probably be mortified!)

^T26- I believe you went to Yale, so you would remember where the info session starts. The mother did not wait outside the room, and when she left there was a lot of “can you believe that?” by other parents . It was pretty comical.

I did but the admissions office was at another location when I attended (shortly after the earth’s mantle cooled). Your anecdote is positively cringe-worthy! Yikes!

At Duke’s Blue Devil Days for admitted students in the spring, they offered a series of events over a couple days to show the school’s best side to students and parents. One of the events was an hour-long information session on Pre-Med options. Since seating in the room was limited (and interest was high) staff at the door informed families that only one person per family would be allowed to attend.

Incredibly, when DD came out of the session, she told me that almost a quarter of the people in the room were parents who had apparently made their kids sit outside.

rmldad, maybe the parents were more into med school than their spawn?

I heard stupider questions on admitted students day then on tours also.

At one a parent kept on insisting on knowing if her student would still be covered by her dental plan during co-op?

At another, several parents wasted the dean of admission’s time by asking about admissions criteria (remember their child was already admitted!)

keepittoyourself - you’re right. I had failed to consider that the parent might have been the one who was admitted to Duke and the kids were there just for fun…

One mom wanted to know if her kid could bring his own mattress. But the doozies were from some tour guides. At one, almost every question (including some that were very legit,) she answered, “I don’t know, I just got back from a year abroad.” Or, “I don’t know, I’venever done that.” She was a senior.

rmldad I meant more perhaps the parents want a doctor child, the child just wants to play the triangle, or something.

Can I add one that our tour guide asked me? I am an Iowa State alum and when the tour guide was talking about their huge student run celebration, VEISHEA, he turned to me and asked, “Did they have that when you went here?” I had to ask him how old he thought I was because it had been around since the 1920’s! He was embarrassed.

At a large session at bu, someone asked about the bs md program. Of course these programs are extremely selective. The questioner asked about transferring to a better medical school.

We heard that same thing with our D’s interviewing at GW. Other parent asked the same thing. If I was on admissions committee that app goes right in the garbage for lack of commitment to a school.
BTW I went to BU BA-MD and there isn’t a better medical school so that question happened to be moot.
