Questions I hope to have cleared up

I was accepted to transfer to UCSD\Muir.

I have read a few posts by people complaining that UCSD is a boring school. Of course, I am there for an education first, but what I do not want is a commuter school where students just show up for classes and commute home. I would prefer a little action and excitement, especially since going to UCSD involves moving to San Diego (from the bay area) so I won’t know anybody and will be initially (and greatly) depending on the structure of UCSD to meet new people.

The way I see it, UCSD seems like it would be a highly social and exciting school. First of all, La Jolla is a coastal community, and the campus is a stone’s throw from the ocean. How can one be bored when in the proximity of such world class beaches? Also, La Jolla appears to be a town that is very oriented toward the university. Where LA exists mostly without concern for UCLA, UCSD looks to be an integral part of La Jolla’s very being as a town.

To me, these are the ingredients of a vibrant and exciting campus. So why do I see posts in which people are claiming that UCSD is a boring place? Can someone please give me the lowdown?

Also - for an encore, as a transfer do I have to pay any attention to this Muir stuff? I’ve already fully completed IGETC.

Thanks

I'm a transfer, Bay Arean (Fremont to be exact), UCSD/Muir acceptee who is concerned about the social scene at UCSD.

I can't answer most of your questions...but regarding the Muir req's (the writing course and another course I believe)...it isn't that big of a deal I think unless you're a science or engineering major because you have to take a lot of UD units. I'm a political science major so it isn't that big of a problem.

Can someone answer his question and the housing question as well? Thanks.

lol, im also in a similar situation. I'm in Concord and got into sixth college as a freshman, poli sci major. I haven't had a chance to visit, and everytime i try to get excited about going there, I keep hearing the same stuff about it. Right now im leaning towards going, but Davis is a lot closer and I like to daydream about UCSB everyonce in a while.

Good Luck with any decision you guys make

Well, in less than 24 hours, I received a couple of replies from people with the same concerns seeking answers. While nobody from UCSD has yet responded and said either "you're all wrong - it's really fun" or "I'm afraid UCSD is the social equivalent of a gall stone," my own original concerns are mildly alleviated simply by seeing that they are shared by others.

UCSD will be my destination this fall no matter what, because it is my number one choice in all respects except for reservations regarding its social scene, and this is not (for me at least) a reason of much considerable weight to influence my major decision making processes.

So if I find that UCSD leaves social liveliness to be desired, I will hail the others who apparently feel similarly and get the ball rolling a little on maybe starting some excitement down there. Though, honestly, like I said in my first post, I cannot believe that the social scene is completely non-existent.

In my opinion (I'm only an incoming freshmen), I think ANY place can be fun. Out of such a huge population, how could everyone be boring characters? Of course not. You are bound to eventualy find some fun people to hang out with. So, socially, I never really worried about that. Besides, if your'e bored, go hiking in the ecological park around there.

From my visits to the school, I thought it was great. Lots of clubs, lots of student organizations pushing you to join and participate. Price Center was really busy too. Lots of people there, lots of socializing going on.

I have no idea why anyone would even consider UC Davis and UC SB when you are accepted to UCSD... maybe my socal bias. :) Around my school, no one even bothered to apply to SB (except the non honor/AP students). And NO ONE (except me) that I know of applied to Davis.

So...UCSD! GOGOGO!

Most people I have met, seem to be happy with UCSD. It might not be as social as the other colleges, but the social scene would be there if you made the effort to look for it.

For me, I'm not interested in parties and booze, so I don't mind the lack of it. I look forward to meeting new people though, and I am sure at a school with 30,000 students, it shouldn't be too hard to find some friends.

And to those who haven't seen it yet, you can read up more about UCSD or ask questions over at this lj community: http://www.livejournal.com/community/ucsd/
