Questions in the Recruiting Game

Hey

I am about to finish my junior year of high school. I my education is the most important thing to me and so I sent my film out to 20 or 25 colleges that I thought I could play at and matched my academic standards hoping football would be the boost to get me in. I got back positive responses from almost 15 schools in the form of emails, mail, and a few phone calls.

I have had problems gauging interest from coaches, are there any tips or clues you can give me?

I know that the coaches are going to cast as wide a net as possible and while I am excited by the process but I need to narrow my list to keep track of things. The Ivy League coaches I have talked to told me I fall within the 4th band academically (and if I fit there I fit anywhere), but when in the process can I be forward with the coaches about asking their interest in me athletically?

Thank you

Well for starters, you shouldn’t be getting any calls yet. Coaches calling you before 7/1 is not allowed. As for gauging interest, just maintain a dialogue - you’ll find during the process that some coaches that seemed very interested early will drop off and others may come on strong near the end. By late summer and fall you may be in regular contact with a few coaches and hopefully be offered some official visits, after which the choice becomes much clearer.

The calls have been from non scholarship schools (the Ivies, Amherst) so i think the rules are different.

Also how big a pool do you think the Ivies receive per band?

The rules are not different. They span the entire NCAA.

And the ivies are given different numbers for each band depending on the sport and on the school.

Yeah I have heard about the way the bands work but how many kids do you think the coaches have to pick from per band

Football, maybe 12-15 in bands 3 and 4?

I’m sorry if im not being clear.

what im trying to say is, How big is the pool of athletes in the fourth band that the coaches narrow down to get the 15 kids?

I would imagine there are hundreds of kids that play football and can make the 4th band. Once the coach starts looking for players with legitimate D1 skills, I’m sure the pool gets small very quickly. Sorry I’m not more help, I just think the whole process my not be quite as cut and dried as you may be thinking. I really recommend reading Chris Lincoln’s “Playing the Game” for some valuable insight

a fyi … it is true coaches can not proactively call you until 7/1 after our junior year … however there is not a limitation to your contacting the coach (and they can respond to your call/email)

DIII schools can call you at anytime throughout your high school year ( he mentioned amherst)

DI coaches, including Ivy League coaches, are not allowed to make or return phone calls until July 1st after junior year. They may return emails and speak with you on the phone, if you call them. They can set up specific times for you to call, but they cannot call you.

how am i a ■■■■■

When is the best time to fill out the online recruiting questionaire? Would it be too late to fill it out after July 1st, the summer before Senior year, since that is when recruiting starts?

Depending on the sport, much of the recruiting is done prior to July 1st. I would think earlier rather than later as far as contacting coaches.

Ok thank you!
