First off, thanks to everyone on the NEU board here who have helped me throughout so much of the college admissions process!

I had a ton of questions for you guys (I move in a week from today!), but now that I am sitting down to ask them, I've forgotten almost all of 'em... so I may be back later with more questions.

Packing-- Anything that you forgot to pack? Something you wish you had around? Something you wish you hadn't brought? I'm following a couple different packing lists, so hopefully I'll get everything covered. Anything specific to Northeastern for some reason that I might not think of?

Boston-- I live 25 miles away, but I'm still not all that familiar with the city... which areas should I avoid at what times? I won't be walking alone or anything, and when I do go into the city, I don't see myself going into any shady areas, but I'd just like to be more aware of my surroundings!

International Village-- How far of a walk will it be for me to get to my classes? I meant to time the walk from the auditorium to IV, but I forgot to. And another question... there is a computer lab/station there, right? Which would mean they have printers, right? I'd buy my own printer if I had to go to the library every time, but if it's in the same building, I'll save my money.

Barnes & Noble Bookstore-- Since the bookstore is part of B&N, can I use a B&N membership card there? I don't want to spend the money on the membership unless I can definitely use it at the college bookstore, but I couldn't find info anywhere. What about gift cards?

The T/Exploring the City-- Do a lot of students hop on the T to explore the city? I'm not sure if I'm asking the question that I'm trying to ask, lol. Ex. Would it be common for students to take the T to Cambridge to catch a movie and go shopping?

Movies-- Where do people go to see a movie in a theater? Are there many university sponsored movie events?

Meal Plan-- How will it work the first week, since move-in is on a Thursday? I'm assuming I won't get 15 meals for 3 days. Does it go into effect that Sunday? Are meals provided for parents during move-in?

[I remembered more questions than I thought I would!]

Any other tips/ general advice is extremely appreciated!

And I am certain that I will be back sometime within the week to ask more questions :)

1.) Masking tape, ethernet/cable wire,
2.) Mission Hill/The Fens (the Fens is getting nicer though)
3.) 10-15 mins?
4.) yes
5.) depends where you go. Cambridge? yea, use the T but nobody goes shopping/sees movies in cambridge
6.) There is a movie theatre over the Fens (15-20 minute walk from West Village) and there is a movie theatre just outside the Boylston T stop. Those are the two most popular theatres for NU kids.
7.) I’m pretty sure the meal plan will start the following Monday but you get “free passes” for the first few days. I dont remember exactly how it works but I remember when I was a freshman I was wondering the same thing and everything worked out well.

One thing I recommend since you live so close is to no bring EVERYTHING the first day you move in. If your parents/sibling/relatives don’t mind, I would have them bring some of the bigger things you can live a week without later. For example, I regret moving in my huge chair the first day of move in and my guitar hero controllers. You can always get those later and it’ll save you a lot of time/hassel.

PM me if you want more detailed responses. I have a Fantasy Football Draft to take care of.

Batteries, a few books, and really thick socks. Personally I wish I had rain boots (as opposed to boots for the snow) because when it hit the point in the year when it would rain, freeze, and then rain again all within 10 hours… It was a pain in the butt to realize my trusty snow boots had a tiny hole that was only noticable when I walked through a slush puddle.

Don’t walk through places at night by yourself. I’ve never felt afraid, even by myself, on campus. The school has a number you can call if you’re weirded out somewhere at night near/on campus, and they’ll come pick you up and drive you back to your dorm. I’ve never done it, but I know a few people who have because they were too lazy to walk across campus in the snow.

I know Barnes and Noble gift cards work at the bookstore (my parents put 600 dollars on one and gave it to me to buy books so I didn’t have to run up my debit card), so I imagine the discount card would work as well. Maybe not on textbooks, though, just on the other more “barnes and noble” type of stuff.

People go into the city depending on what their interests are. Some people head to BU or BC or MIT a lot for frats, and some people head to Cambridge for the cool and interesting shopping. Then again, I know a lot of people who just walk to Pru or Newbury when they want to shop. I’m from an area with a lot of huge malls, so I’ve gone to the Lechmere (sp?) T stop in Cambridge a few times to visit the Galleria, but I’m not really big on going to Cambridge for other things. It completely depends on what you want to do. Not many people however (especially freshman) are going to say on a Wednesday night “oh, lets go get something to eat in the North End tonight”, they’ll go to the dining hall or order chinese food. It’s mainly the weekends when city-exploring happens, but obviously that’s just my experience.

Typically when my friends go to the movies (which isn’t often), we head to the theather in Fenway or the AMC by boston commons.

You will get 15 meals for 3 days. Go to Outtakes Thursday (it may not be open though, for this very reason) and try and use up a bunch of them. Move-in is just your parents dropping you off, so no meals are provided.

RedSox: Thanks a ton for the answers! Good luck in your draft
I just discovered how much I love Cambridge over the past year, but I’m sure there’s just as much stuff going on on campus anyways. And I’m going to try hard really hard not to bring too much (especially since my roommate is from Cali, so she’ll probably need a bit more space than me).

neuchimie: Rain boots, that’s a great idea! For EA Accepted Students day and for orientation, it was pouring and the shoes that I wore on both occasions did not fare well. And thanks for the other detailed answers!!
The reason I asked about the meals for parents was just that one of the mailings they got said something about eating in a dining hall with the students. But there’s also a reception thing for them that I believe includes refreshments. I’m not too worried about them going hungry or anything, lol. Just wondering :)

Thanks again guys!

1.) Didn’t forget anything and didn’t feel like I needed anything, though I have a predominant attitude of “Ill deal with it” if I don’t have something
2.)Dont go further south than those colleges of the fenway, dont be dumb, dont walk alone at night, and most importantly, dont be dumb and walk alone.
3.)I’d say 5-10 minutes, what I did is before my first day of classes I walked into every building where I had classes the following day and found the rooms I needed to be in.
4.)I think you’re good on both.
5.)The first week/ few days before classes my friends and I on our floor explored a bit, its fun, it’s a good way to hang out with people on your floor and make friends.
6.)There is a movie theatre up by fenway, the school does put on movie/screen plays on a regular basis.
7.)Meal plan should be good to go when you get there, it resets after Sunday so any meals used before Sunday at midnight you dont “lose” for Monday-Sunday night.

General tips, be very friendly the first week, meet lots of people, make lots of attempts to be friendly. Have fun, the first week is an awesome time

^Thanks!!

I’m wicked excited for Welcome Week and then Dr. Drew!
