Questions like these suck but

What is the lowest GPA you think Brown would be willing to accept for non-athletes or legacies???

I’m anticipating my SAT scores to be high seeing as I’m taking a prep class and I’m in the 700’s on everything but Math, so that’s pretty good right? My GPA, however, by the end of this year (my junior year), I anticipate to be 3.80 W, and 3.38 UW (I had a bad freshman year). So that’s really really low for Brown huh? What do you think? Would they give me a chance despite the fact I’m not a legacy nor an athlete?

masha, if you have shown improvement since your freshman year it will count for a lot, especially if you have good scores
have faith in yourself.
make sure you finish your junior year strong

they'll understand if u have bad freshmen year grades.

dont make it sound like these adcom people love to punihs people for not getting 5.0 W GPAs. they were in your shoes before so they can understand you prob had a tough year transitioning from junior high to high school.

from what i've been hearing, brown really cares more about your personality. let it shine in the interview and essay and im sure you'll do fine.

My freshmen year, I had like an 88% average. I was taking honors and all, but I really didn't care and wasn't thinking about college yet. Last year (10th grade), I had a 95% average. This year as a junior, I am taking all of my classes at college. Last semester, I received all A's (only took three classes) in Precalculus, English, and Spanish IV. This semester I am taking 18 college credits (including two lab sciences) and expect A's in them.

My question is: I know some schools like upward trends, but for Brown (I want to apply ED), is this just going to look like a bad, slow start?

That's a good question (person above me... alex). I'd like to know too.

You don't need to put a preamble on that question ("Questions like these suck...") Nearly everyone else who is applying is probably wondering the same thing, but they don't have the courage to ask. Anyway, (and this is just my opinion), your GPA is not too low (although your chances for Brown aren't the greatest). If you explained in your application why you didn't do well freshman year (and your reasons are something other than, "I was lazy and school doesn't matter."), the school will understand (provided you have something else in your application that makes you stand out). Admissions officers are not robots, so they're not gonna look at your application and immediately say, "Bleep. Must destroy application. GPA not over 3.75. Bleep."

You don't know that ;)

Hee hee :) It seems like they are at UMichigan.

Aside from a lack in motivation, confusion as to what i wanted to do with my future and a general lack in goals i have no other reasons for my dismal freshman year grades... I changed A LOT since then but to me that doesnt sound like a very good excuse for doing so poorly....

Well, if you did well the other three years you still have a somewhat decent chance.

I guess everyone at one point or another has felt what i'm feeling.. a bit of indaquecy. Just today some friends and I were looking over our unofficial transcripts we had just recieved.. and, well, mine compared to theirs is pretty bad. I have a lot of B's compared to them, and as i mentioned before, not so steller freshman year grades whereas they have straight A's all 3 years so far. meh, I guess applying to Brown is worth a try.

It's always worth a try! Besides, I'm sure you have a wonderful personality/special talent!

Sure, it's more than worth a try. I had a ton of B's due to a "lack of maturity and focus" freshman and sophomore years. I still got into school.

seriously, give it a shot. i had good grades freshman and junior years, but my grades sophomore year were borderline awful. your case is more favorable because you've completely improved since your freshman year. try to do well on your sats, as they can compensate for low grades, to some extent. most importantly, let your personality shine through!

hmm....maybe i should have had my counselor mention that i moved school districts half way across the country during the summer between 8th grade and 9th to explain my less than stellar freshman year(~3.57uw) as compared to my sophmore/junior years(3.9+uw) but i didnt, oh well. im suprised im still in the top 5% weighted despite that 3.57.....yay for cheating the system and maxing out weighted classes! but getting straight As freshman year and being ranked in the top 5 PEOPLE out of 370 would have been nicer....

but there's nothing you can do. all we can do is hope they see past our freshman years. good luck to you next year! one of the greatest mistakes for me this year was being too lazy to fill out the Brown app. #12, you would think that i had gotten use to filling those forms, but unfortunatly they dont use the common app, and after my experience with the uchicago app, i just didnt have it left in me. yay for brown! and all the best luck to you! dont be lazy and start those apps and essays early.

3.54 is nothing to be ashamed of, especially if it is unweighted. If you don't get into Brown, it won't be because that average is a little lower than "it should be".

"If you don't get into Brown, it won't be because that average is a little lower than "it should be"."

you're right, itll be because i didnt send them an application.

Kosuke,

I have the same problem. I'm currently a junior, and I've been to 3 different high schools in 3 years. It's affected my grades and EC's, but I'm doing the best I can.......that's all anyone can ask for in the situation
