hey! so i finally decided im going to apply ED to CALS! wow so i have a few questions maybe you have some insight? any reply is appreciated!

-what are the main characteristics cornell is looking for in a student in particular? good things to communicate through your essay?

-for CALS what are the most important factors? fit/gpa/sat/location/urm/personality/major?

-is cornell lenient to a lower freshmman year gpa? or is there a 0 tolerance sort of policy you think?

-can i submit any supplemental materials? an art supplement or a research abstract?

-how important are recs? do you think if im applying for CALS i should have at least one science teacher do my rec or does it really not matter as long as they say something thoughtful?

-would you say cornell tends to dip their high standards a little bit or not at all for ed applicants?

-how does being a urm affect my admission chances to cornell in specific? (hispanic)

-do you think cornell is looking for a quirky/creative applicant? how important is uniqueness?

well here are some questions racing through my noggin...if you have input on any (or all!!) of these i appreciate you dearly - many thanks :)

i have no other school that i want to ED and i do know a lot about the school itself and why i want to go there - which i think is more important than my knowledge of the admissions aspect of it (plus i could look at stats and numbers all day im looking for information i wouldnt find on the website) - plus it is a stretch for me. im just trying to get a basis on what to write in my essays and assess my likelihood of being considered…sorry if i came off as ignorant…

I don’t think you’ve answered GCMOmofTwo’s question. Guidance but not specific answers, are on the Cornell website. If you’re deficient in these basics, how can anyone be confident in your declaration that you “have no other school that you want to ED”?

Your essays should be about what’s important to you, based on the prompts. There is no formula. The biggest factors are GPA and transcript rigor. Weighted or unweighted doesn’t matter. If there’s no rank, it doesn’t matter. Cornell will figure it out. Please spend some time on your own personal research on what Cornell says. At this point, you won’t be submitting a very cohesive ED application.

Fit, and showing growth as a person.

Same as 1.

I got in, and I had an 86% my freshman year. Take that as you will.

You don’t want to look like a tryhard. At the most I would send in subject test scores (if they are good, CALS doesn’t even require it anymore)

Doesn’t matter.

They most definitely do.

You will have a better chance. Cornell loves diversity.

Creative? Sure, but don’t be annoying about it. I think uniqueness is good, but don’t sound like you’re bragging.

once again I apologize for my lack of cohesion. my gc, parents, and I just decided to ED yesterday I’m positive that I can get it together for when my app is due…just wanted some food for thought

I don’t think you’re able to submit an arts supplement. I’m applying there as well and wanted to submit one, but the common app doesn’t say we can. Moreover, somewhere on their website, they said that if you’re not an architecture or art major (something along these lines), then they don’t want to see a supplement anyhow.
