Questions on CTY

Hey, I'm a sophomore and I heard about CTY(center for talented youth)

and considering that i've just moved in would it be too late to apply?

and please, does it really cost near Two~Three Thousand Dollars for merely a 3weeks of camp? (3 thousand if you use the dormatory otherwise 2000)

and does it count as a full year credit? also, do you get to choose whatever subject you wish to take?

thanks, best of lucks :)

I assume you are asking about the summer programs. Here is a link:

[Summer Programs](http://cty.jhu.edu/summer/summer-programs.html)

In order to enroll in CTY courses, you need to have taken a qualifying test (eg, SAT, ACT) and have scores above a certain level. I am pretty sure you can’t use the PSAT. The cutoffs for scores are different for the different groupings of courses (so “CTY: Intensive Studies for 7th Graders and Above” has higher scores required than “CTY: Academic Explorations for 7th Graders and Above”.

You have missed the regular registration deadline for this year, but late registration is still open. Fewer courses with openings now, and there is some kind of late fee.

The cost is along the lines you mentioned, depends on which program & location. The website shows this info. You can apply for financial aid, although I don’t know much about it (I assume it is strictly need based, though). However, it looks like the financial aid deadline for this year was March 26. You could contact them and ask if it is still possible to apply for financial aid.

Regarding credit, I am not aware that any of the CTY courses are offered for credit. Your school may allow you to move ahead in a subject you have studied at CTY, but that would be up to the individual school. Most kids take them because they are intellectually curious about the subject.

due to regional differences, this can only be answered by people living in north atlantic areas…
in johnshopkins?princeton? … please answer, those of you living near these areas! :(

oh, i see you already did answer. thanks.
but would i be able to take science/math related areas with only sat 2c math 800?
i did not really take sat yet since i moved in just a couple of months earlier… aww
and this is the last year i can take cty since i;m turning 16 in may! aww :frowning:
but i also saw that there were other programs for grade 10~12. any ideas? :)

Really that is not true. CTY programs are open to kids from all over the country. We live in the Midwest, and my kid is registered with CTY and is eligible for CTY courses. You do not have to live in the Northeast, although it is more common for kids in the Northeast to attend CTY programs (just because they are closer to home). My daughter has not attended (has been going to Davidson THINK instead), but we have looked at the courses and information before she decided what to do each of the last two summers.

Yes, there is a program for 10-12 grades, that same summer program link shows it. However, they are not math/science related courses for that age group (this summer they are offering “The Civic Leadership Institute” and “Global Issues in the 21st Century”). As with the other courses, you have to have SAT or ACT scores to register.
