Questions on diversity, cliques and school unity

I've been accented to SBU for a few months now, and although it wasn't one of my top choices, I'm seriously considering it now.

I've been accepted to Loyola MD and they gave me $30,000 (making it almost equal to the cost of a SUNY) but the reason I'm considering Stony Brook is because it is definitely MUCH more diverse than Loyola, which is really important to me. For me, diversity = different variety of extracurriculars and students, which appeals to me.

So that brings me to my questions:

How is the diversity of Stony Brook? Is it as diverse as they say?
Are there a lot of cliques?
How united are the students? From what I've heard, students tend to conform to their own ethnicities and kind--which totally defeats the purpose of a diverse school in my humble opinion. ):

Thanks a lot!

I think like most places, you're going to be friends with who you're going to be friends with. There are cliques everywhere; it's very natural for students to gravitate to other students who are similar to them.

I think the key to the diversity on this campus is that it opens up an enormous range of opportunities that might not be available to you at other places, in terms of club activities, cultural performances and events, dining experiences, and things like that.

A lot of experiencing diversity depends on you and what you do with it. If you want a diverse campus, we have it.

Yeah, it is up to you. You could go to loyola and then transfer or something if you don't like it there. I would consider each department/program/campus setting first and then see which appeals to you most. Diversity is what you make of it, like sbu said. The least way in which it will impact you is that you will bump into a lot more people from other countries/races as you go about your day compared to schools west or down south.
