So I will have completed about 300 hours of community service by the end of HS. But how do I write this on the uc app/common app. Like I started half way through 10th grade, and this year (junior) I will have done more hours than last year. And in senior year I will have done more hours also. So do I average out the total hours by the three years for the weeks part. Can I keep my hours the same but just average the weeks out?
yes that’s fine. A solid estimation is sufficient. No one will care if it’s 300 or 35 hours. You’re all good.
OP, my kid stressed about that too. In the end, we just estimated how many hours she did each summer and multiplied it by 3. They are not going to check, and any volunteering is good. I can’t believe how much time we spent trying to work it out though. When it comes time to do your app, I think the best policy is if in doubt, just estimate. As long as it doesn’t sound impossible, it won’t raise any flags.
They ask how many hours per week, how many weeks a year on the Common App.
More important is what you did, you organized X, inspired this, raised this much Y, led Z. Doing a bunch of different projects as a grunt while noble, is not as inspiring as organizing and leading and showing commitment to a a few causes important to you
Yes, the best you can do is to just average things out to match the format of the application.
My D didn’t like that format because she did many activities that required a big commitment for a concentrated period (ex. some of her community service work was that way, theater productions were that way) but she did the best she could with the format and I think admissions officer understand. It was not a problem for her the admissions process.
