I was wondering how Hofstra's Radio/Tv/Film program was? I would think it would have many opportunities because of its proximity to nyc. Ive seen that you can get a BA in film studies and production or a BS in Video/Television and Film- what is the difference in the program?

Most of the posts on the board are from 2006 and say that the school is changing for the better- have there been any results of that?

Is Hofstra anything more than a stereotypical commuter school with snobby people and great parties?

We live about 20 min from Hofstra and their Radio/Film/TV program does have a good rep on LI. My son’s friend just received his acceptance (it was his first choice school because of the program!) and he will be attending as a Freshman in the fall. I don’t know the differences between the programs though.

There was a recent article in Newsday (LI paper) about the changing reputation of Hofstra and it would seem like they are doing all the right things. They are being more selective in their admissions…31% from Top 10% in HS Class, added an Honors College, hosted the Presidential debate last year, will be opening a medical school, etc. They are trying to develop a national and international reputation and these are all reasons that my son applied.

According to the same article, 47% of students are from out of state so it’s really not just a commuter school. As for snobby people, you’ll find them anywhere. Great parties? I really don’t know.

Thanks thats really informative and it seems like you would know since you are around there. Yeah living in SoCal I don’t really mind snobs anymore anyways haha. If you don’t mind me asking how is the neighborhood around it?

The immediate surrounding area in Hempstead is just ok…other nearby towns are a lot nicer but the campus is not too far from Roosevelt Field Mall (major shopping area), Jones Beach, Freeport’s nautical mile and Eisenhower Park. And it’s about 40 minutes by train to NYC. I think the website says they have a shuttle to the train station and the mall. Maybe even the beach.
