Hello, I've been a Windows user all my life, but for a change I recently bought a Mac iBook G4. I find that this is a pretty interesting machine, but it is a little difficult getting used to as a person who has used only the Windows system.

That said, I've got some questions for all the Mac users frequenting this web site.

First, what would be Mac's advantages/disadvantages over Windows?

Second, what should I do in order to make another window pop up for using the internet? Even when I press the Safari logo several times, all the machine does is pop up the same window I've been using.

Please be of help for me~. Also, if there is anything useful about Mac you wish to post, please do so. I'd appreciate it.

im new to macs too...i just got an 17'' imac g5 for college. to make a new window in safari you can go up to file-->new i think. also, you can set your dock so that clicking on the icon will make a new window pop up, but that applies to every program. but again, im new to macs so there might be an easier way that i havent figured out yet

the little apple key + N makes a new window pop up. but enable tabbed browsing--its easier than opening a bunch of windows. I got an ibook when I graduated high school, and now, 6 weeks later, I'm completely commfortable with it. It took me about 2 weeks of using it to fully get everything, but it's all cool now. If you don't already have one, I would recommend getting a mouse with more than one button because not being able to right-click really bothered me. I also wish I could make AIM look like it does on my pc--I dont know why the whole profile isnt together, but I guess that's not really a big deal. Anyways, just keep using, it'll get better

That's the one thing I haven't figured out yet, is there a way to read profiles using AIM on a Mac? I love using it, but I definitely wish I could look at people's profiles; maybe that's something I just haven't found yet.

Yeah, you can download AIM for mac on the the AIM website. I find that's much better than ichat. Also in terns of windows, I think the easiest way to navigate them is to downloadFirefox from mozilla.com and you can use tabs so all your windows are visible (since mac doesn't have the same bar with minimized things that PC's do).

The minimized windows show up on the dock, unless I am mistaken (I've only had my mac for three days, but it's running beautifully).

iChat is cute, but it's kind of simplistic. You can get the normal AIM from the website www.aim.com. There are also a variety of different programs that run with AIM screen names but may be more functional for you.

I'm just whining about the AIM format. On my pc, when I look at someone's profile, I can see their info and their away message all in one. The mac version separates it so that you have to click on different buttons to see their away message and profile in separate windows. I kinda prefer the windows version, but it really isn't something big. And for what its worth, I actually like safari better than fiirefox. Its laid out in pretty much the same way, plus its installed for you! Can't get much easier than that!

I've never really gotten hooked on firefox, though my computer came installed with it since I bought it from my college.
I agree, Safari is quite good. The simpler the better for me.

I use Mozilla Firefox for my internet browser-the tab function is simply amazing! (apple button+T for new tab and apple button+w to close one!) For my instant messenger I use Adium, it has a lot of cool features and lets you sign on with different services at once (AIM, Yahoo, etc.). The only bad thing is that you can't direct connect to other people.

I've been considering Adium. I didn't like gaim, it did weird things to the font and it just felt awkward.
Does Adium have tabbed conversations?

the buttons to the left and right of your space bar are the "command" buttons. hold that down and push the n button to get a new window when you're online. when you're using microsoft word it will get you a new word document, when you're playing a video game, it will start a new game.
some other command keys: c:copy v:paste x: cut b: bold q: quit z: undo p: print s: save a: select all...anyway, I think you can find all the command shortcuts next to the command on the scroll down menu on the top of the screen.

some stuff that is good for using itunes: if you have an ipod, download ipodrip, and then you can take songs off your ipod or anyone elses, and put them directly onto itunes.
also, when you are on a network with other itunes users, itunes allows the users to share their libraries, and with a program called ourtunes, you can also download other peoples' songs onto your own itunes. this will be especially helpful in a college dorm, when you'll be sharing w/ several ppl and you usually are not allowed to download songs.

yeah, and ichat sucks, use aim. one weird thing about aim on macs: you can still talk to ppl when you have an away message up. this is really cool.

anyway, i've been a mac user my whole life, so if you have any other questions, let me know.

I got an Ibook Thursday, and I dled AIM for Mac. It dled as a .bin file instead of .dmg file. What program do you use to open this type of binary file?

Yea that's cool, but it's not specific to macs. It's in the new version of AIM. Works on PCs as well.

I just downloaded Adium and I LOVE IT. It's very pretty and functional. Much better than plain AIM.

Majayiduke, I thought that a window with all the stuff you've downloaded just comes up and you can just click that to open the install file?

Whoah you guys were right! Adium rocks! Centralized IM service and tabbed conversations! Awesome!

And Ipod Rip really was great for moving my songs off my ipod onto my new Ibook! Thanks guys!

Oh yeah one more question: How do you set up short cuts? Like If I copy it only makes a duplicate of the application, but not merely a shortcut like I want.
