questions on Pell, FSEOG: could they be called something else?

We are still evaluating award letters and adding to our 6-7 school Pro/Con list :-(

I have asked the question here recently about whether, if you qualify for Pell (we do), that it should be listed on our award letter.

I was answered that it is a federal entitlement, so it should be listed.

However, in the case of one school, there was new information from the DRT, so the school was reviewing my D's award.

We received the new award letter back - again, with no listing for Pell. In this case, even if it was added in, it would probably be too much of a gap ... but, I'm wondering why they don't have to offer it. I think I'm missing something.

Also, I am confused about FSEOG. If you qualify for Pell, do you also qualify for FSEOG? Can anyone advise if this is listed as any other name on award letters? (Wooster's, for instance, lists something called "Supp Education Opp Grant") ... is this FSEOG? if so, why are other schools not offering it?

I have googled this topic, and most info is more dated than peoples' experiences I'm reading here. And some of the posters here, frankly, explain it better :-)

Thank you for those who understand this process and are willing to bear with my dumb questions ...

The sup education opp grant is FSEOG (Federally funded supplementary opportunity grant). FSEOG is what is called campus based aid. Schools are given a very limited and fixed amount of dollars and set their own criteria for awarding it and their own maximum. Many schools reuire a 0 EFC for FSEOG, but even then there are more students that qualify than they have funs. Once they award all the funds they can not get any additional so many students that might qualify will not receive it. SEOG (and WS and Perkins) will vary from school to school and from year to year. (My daughter received it some years and not others though her EFC was the same - the school simply ran out of funds before they processed her aid some years).

Unlike FSEOG, Pell is an entitlement grant so should be the same at every school.

Call the schools that didn’t offer you a Pell and ask why.

Extremely helpful, swimcatsmom - thank you so much.

thumper1: will do, just wanted to make sure I had the right info before I did.

Perhaps in reviewing your information from the IRS, the school my have changed your EFC (which they are allowed to and are required to make corrections). With the change in your EFC it could be that your EFC is too high to be Pell eligible. When you contact the FA office inquire about the review of your information and if there is now a change to your EFC (specially in the event that other schools follow suit)
