Questions on SAT subject test!

Hello. I am planning on taking my SAT this spring and PSAT this fall. (will start studying for SAT next week) I was surfing the SAT website and saw that they have subject tests for each subject. I was interested in the U.S history and chem SAT test. ( I am taking both of those classes next year, honors).

So my question's are

-Since i am going to college for Comp science or programming, is it worth taking history and chem SAT test? Also i know there is a math level 1 & 2, should i take those instead since math is related to tech?
-if i do take the math 1 & 2, is math 1 easier then math 2?
-Did anyone take the math 1 & 2, U.S history, and Chem? Are they easy, how long did you study, and what did you get?
-My last question is if there are any books for the math 1 &2, chem, and U.S history i can use? I know there are a lot of SAT books, i am using the Princeton review books that my sister gave me.

Thanks so much for reading this and taking the time to reply!

don’t take math 1…not only is it a pointless test, it also has the worst curve of all of the subject tests.

Do you know what colleges you want to apply to? Do they require you to submit SAT Subject Test scores?

You can take up to three Subject Tests at one time. When I took them last year, they were all in one book and you didn’t have to pick which ones you wanted to take until you got to the test center. I’d recommend taking Math II and not Math I (Math I isn’t designed to be easier exactly, but Math II is more advanced and there’s no reason to take both), but other than that you should just pick the tests you’d do best on.

I took Math II after Calculus BC, and got 800. (I think there are some questions about limits, but other than that there’s no calculus.)
I took Chemistry after AP Chemistry, and got 740. I imagine I would have done worse if I’d taken it after only one high school chemistry class.
I had a giant SAT Subject Test prep book from the library, and I took a few practice tests to prepare for these.

I got a 740 on the USH test with about an hour of studying (granted, it was after the AP test which I studied for endlessly). I used my AP review book, but my friends recommended that book that covers all SAT 2 subjects.

Don’t take Math 1 over Math 2.

Took Math II this June after Precalc, 800. And there’s a couple of limit questions, but they’re VERY basic. A month or two of after school studying, and it wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t too difficult either.

Very easy if you have the concepts down.

Not at all. Time pressure and some awkward wording makes it go beyond just “having the concepts down.”

Thanks for the response! I just looked at the colleges i want to apply and none require a SAT subject test. (only SAT or ACT). I decided i will take MATH 2 and U.S history. Also a couple of questions. If i don’t take AP chem will i not be able to do good on the SAT Chem test? I am only taking Chem honors next year and Physics in 12th. So i am not sure if i should take chem subject test.

Also i saw that there are Barrons SAT subject books. Do you recommend those? I will probably get those soon and start studying while studying for normal SAT…

And thanks for everyone response! I appreciate it very much!

It depends on how good your high school chemistry class was. You could take a practice test and see how you do.

I took US History last month and score a 780. Honestly, if you’ve taken US History at a higher level (and maybe even prepped for the AP Exam) then the subject test is a piece of cake. I was actually a bit disappointed with my score because the test felt so simple. Make sure to focus on facts if you study for that subject test, as its questions tend to include specific names and bits of evidence rather than general trends (like the AP exam). Best of luck with whichever tests you take!

If you really have the concepts down, not just memorization but creative application you should be fine.

Take precalc then math ii. Did that this year and got a 800 with no specific prep (except one practice test).
Also took World History SAT II; studied specifically for the AP test and got an 800 on the world history SAT. Take both released practice tests for an accurate estimate of what you’ll score.

Applications and knowing the concepts are two different things…

SAT chem includes a lot of things taught in AP chem, so honors won’t prepare you super well unless if you self study most of the concepts. Also, the curve isn’t the best if you’re aiming for a super high score, so I would recommend sticking with your stronger subjects.

Alright. I probably wont take chem sat. Only U.S history and math 2. Thanks!
