Questions on the Dining Plan

Okay, time to sign up for dorms and dining plans. My daughter spent last summer at UCLA in Hedrick, and she was saying the meal plan cannot be used for the "boutique" restaurants (Bruin Cafe, Cross roads Cafe). However, on the dining plan website it says those cafes do accept the meal plan. So how does that work, say, if you want a shake from the Crossroads Cafe? Do they take off a lunch?

Also, the plans say you can get a meal coupon for lunch or dinner to be used on campus. How much is this meal coupon worth in an on campus eatery?

The boutique restaurants accept meal plans.

If you have a premier meal plan, you can swipe as much as you want...2 shakes, 3 shakes, etc.

A meal coupon is given if you wish to convert a swipe to a campus meal coupon. I believe the coupon is worth $1.50. So, basically you can take off $1.50 off of any meal you purchase on campus.

Thanks! For some reason the "ask ucla" folks couldn't answer these questions. I'm guessing it's an artificial intelligence machine that needs updating.

If you don't have premiere then you swipe one per meal period
So you can eat dinner in the dining halls and get a shake for like a midnight snack or something (Crossroads isn't open for lunch)

so if I ate dinner and want a shake what do I do? do I have to pay cash for one or are they just gonna point and laugh at me because I can't get one in anyway (meaning that they only take meal swipes and nothing else)...

If you have premiere it doesn't matter.
If you don't, but you still have extra meal swipes, then you can go after 10pm
Not sure if Crossroads takes cash, they probably do though.
Otherwise they'll take EasyPay which is like the debit card feature of your BruinCard

no cash, only bcaf takes cash, on the left register

"If you don't have premiere then you swipe one per meal period"

Meal Periods:
After Midnight - 12:00 AM to 2:59 AM
Breakfast - 3:00 AM to 10:54 AM
Lunch - 10:55 AM to 4:54 PM
Dinner - 4:55 PM to 9:59 PM
Before Midnight - 10:00 PM to 11:59 PM

So with Premier 19 or Gold 19 you can keep going back to res dining for more food between 3am and 9:59pm and it only counts as 3 meals? Sweet.

How key is the My Pizza feature (for someone who likes pizze, obviously). Looks like only Premier 19 offers that.

The Gold 19 is "designed for students who eat in the residential dining facilities most of the time." Sounds like it's not good at Bruin Cafe or Crossroads (where are these?).

"Premiere" is Premiere 19 and Premiere 14

The res halls are buffet style, so you can get as much food as you want while you're there. If you leave the dining hall, then you have to swipe again to get back in.

People usually use it around the end of the quarter when they have to use up their swipes, you can also get buffalo wings and drinks with premiere, or use a credit card if you don't have premiere

There's "the hill" where all dorms/dining halls/boutiques are scattered around each other. All meal plans can be used for Bruin Cafe/Crossroads/Puzzles/Rendevous

the food is so overated here.

^seriously....im sick of it now.

yeah, during breaks when everyone asks me at the food i say, "you know, its pretty good." if somebody would catch me now, i'd say "it keeps you alive." it is NOT #2 in the country, i can tell you that much, having sampled better food even in other LA colleges.

Hey, I still like it :(

nah UCLA is actually better (oncampus) compared to some other colleges. but after eating the same kinda food (same kinda ingredients) OVER AND OVER again, it gets tiring.

btw OP: This quarter I had the normal 14 plan. Next year, I got the 14Premier. If you are a coffee/tea person in the afternoon then get premier :)

wait so there is a dining hall in every res hall? and every plaza? if so can we swipe at all the res hall dining halls or just the one you bought food at? say like I have a friend living in another hall and we want to have dinner...

you can swipe ANYWHERE on the hill.
where you live has absolutely nothing to do with it (if it did, hedrick ppl would be SOL on friday dinners because that dining hall closes then) xD

as for meal plans... 14p is what i have, and it's the most popular for a reason. i generally eat breakfast in my room, then i'll eat lunch on the hill. coming back from campus on a hot day = 3pm smoothie. then, dinner around 6-8. and sometimes i like a late-night snack at bruin caf. also with premiere you can use extra swipes to get bottled beverages, and you don't have to wait to be able to eat after that.
premiere is more $ (about $300) but it is COMPLETELY worth it. so much more flexibility. eat anywhere you want, whenever you want, as many times as you want. people without premiere get by fine, but i don't want to be dependent on the clock!
oh and hiker... "residential dining facilities" refers to anything on the hill. dining halls AND specialty restaurants xD

i've had 14 regular the whole year, hate relying on the clock so much. next year 14p for sure.

Assuming you want to eat more than 14 meals in a week (which let's just say covers M-F 3x/day), can you pay cash for other meals on the hill? or do you buy the rest off campus or from groceries in your room?

if you want more than 14, you get 19 ;)

Only Bruin Cafe accepts cash, but you can easily make deposits into your card.
Puzzles is the only place open on Saturday, and everywhere that you can pay with cash is closed on Sunday.

If you really have to eat on the hill on either days, you can just buy a meal voucher for ~$7/meal to eat at the residential restaurants.
