Questions on the Dining Plan

mom here---14p best if D eats breakfast in room? or 11 with $$ on Bruin card?

...puzzles isn't open saturday.
bcaf is open 5pm-2am on weekends.
and crossroads is another place open weekends (but only 9pm-midnite sunday)

here's a good way for anyone to determine their meal plan:
are you going to go home most weekends? don’t go above 14. going to go off campus a lot? try 11.
are you a full-on breakfast eater (you want more than cereal in your room or a banana/granola bar on the way to class)? breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day in the dining halls will need 19.
do you think you’ll want to eat lunch on campus most days? (depends on your class schedule) if so, 14. (basically, figure out how many meals a day you want to eat in the dorms, and how many on campus/in westwood/at home)
are you an athlete or a guy with a large appetite? 19.
are you a girl? unless you’re CERTAIN you want 3 meals in the dorms a day, EVERY day (except weekends)… you want 14.

also, keep in mind… you can start with TOO MANY meals and downgrade at the beginning of each quarter once you’ve realized you’re drowning in meal swipes.
but trust me, girls, don’t let your parents push you into 19. you WILL have enough food on 14! the girl next door to me ended up using her last 75ish swipes on cases of water and Gatorade at the end of her first quarter, because she had THAT MANY left over!!!

there's plenty of reasons 14p is the most popular. most students want to eat most, but not every, meal on the hill because it's convenient. most people don't eat breakfast in the dining halls, or if they do, they might eat lunch on campus. and premiere gives much needed flexibility. say you want nachos and a smoothie: 2 meal swipes, 1 meal period, no problemo. non-premiere can be a headache, but, there are people who manage perfectly well.

what i do with 14p (if this helps):
sunday, cereal in room cuz i wake up late, dining hall dinner (grab banana for next day)
monday, banana on way to class, then lunch on campus, dinner in dorms, late night bcaf hot chocolate.
tuesday, dining hall breakfast lunch and dinner.
weds, granola bar to class, dining hall lunch and dinner.
thurs, cereal in room, late lunch at puzzles, dining hall dinner, bcaf pastry.
fri, cereal in room, on campus lunch, dining hall dinner, bcaf pastry.
sat, cereal in room, dining hall lunch, bcaf hot chocolate.
sooo... it all evens out!

i go to either the student store, CVS, or ralph's for supplemental groceries. ralph's is good for fruit since you can't buy it on campus.
...have a fridge and a microwave, and you can have any number of meals in your room! :)

APOL- i say start with 14p. if she thinks it's too many, keep in mind the deadlines for downgrading and then you can go to 11. you can't go up however.
also, swipes can be used as snacks as well. say, an after-class smoothie or late-night clam chowder (studying brain food!)
you can get snack food on campus/westwood as well, but sometimes, it's nice to go hang out at bcaf with friends, even if it's in between lunch and dinner.
11 averages to lunch and dinner on weekdays, and one dining hall meal on weekends. if she's living on campus and not coming home, and doesn't want to go around finding supplemental groceries all the time, i don't suggest that. it's a plan meant for students who go home from time to time. also, 11 does not have a premiere option.
so i'd say stick with some kind of 14 (obviously i recommend premiere, but it's not necessary for everybody) :)

I was referring to the website: http://map.ais.ucla.edu/portal/site/UCLA/menuitem.789d0eb6c76e7ef0d66b02ddf848344a/?vgnextoid=9f32064a9a7d1010VgnVCM1000008f8443a4RCRD

and it states that Puzzles is open past 7PM on Saturday, and BCafe is open at the same hours on Sunday.

Thanks liyana haha. I don't eat much on weekends on the hill.

Anyways, I hear rumors of Puzzles turning into an ice cream parlor next year. Interesting idea.

Same here. At least Puzzles will be swamped next year, and the card taker person there won't be so bored.

They should bring back Boba. That would be as hot selling item as the smoothies and shakes.

Oh man, BruinCafe used to have boba? drool

liyana179--Thank you for your invaluable insight--It was not clear that I could not upgrade---will try the 14p and see if that meets her needs.

boba....yummy

2-3 years ago:

It was Crossroads that had boba and Mexican food. I don't know what Rendezvous had, but Puzzles had the best food back then (sandwiches, burgers, etc.)

With premiere, how does the cases of water work at the end of the quarter?

1 swipe = 1 bottle?

1 swipe = 2 bottles

I must be the only person who goes to puzzles... whenver i'm there it's dead and i go at peak hours. cant beat that turkey pastrami.

i go there for the beef sandwhich. Its sad and nice that its dead. I can get my food so fast there!

i go to puzzles for the bbq chicken pizza... i'm gonna miss that next year... regardless of whether puzzles becomes an ice cream parlor or not, it's definitely gonna change.
and it prolly won't have the pizza anymore T__T
