Questions on University of Puget Sound

I am interested in U of Puget Sound. I would go going into Exercise Science and plan on playing varsity basketball. Could you give me some information of the quality of dorms, food, the basketball program, weight room, and the Exercise Science program. Any information on any of these subjects would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

DS will be a junior at UPS this fall. He is an exercise science major and on the swim team so I can answer some of your questions

Exercise Science progrm-- Great program, good acceptance rate to Physical Therapy programs if you are interested in that. UPS has a PT program so good advising available. Known to be a tough major-- requires Chemistry, Biology and Physics as well as the Ex Sci classes. Anatomy and Physiology supposed to be 2 of the most demanding classes at UPS (at leat according to DS and his friends) DS is doing a Business minor as well so possible to fit in a minor fairly easily. A new building for Exercise Science and PT school just opened last year so outstanding facilities

Since UPS is small they are very helpful-- when DS was registering for classes for his sophomore year Anatomy class had big waitlist-- 18 students. Over the summer he got an email saying that due to high demand they added another section and all students from waitlist got into the class and the lab. This is very different than the large State U where I work

Dorms for freshmen are mostly typical double rooms. He picked the dorm closest to the pool due to 6 am practices-- he got his first choice. He was on a hall with all students interested in Exercise Science-- all were in the same freshman seminar class. It was a coed hall and lots of athletes. It had been recently painted and bathrooms renovated but nothing exciting

Lots of great options sophomore year. UPS owns something like 60 houses around the campus that they have converted to campus housing. Fully furnished, 2 ovens in kitchen great location. Same price as dorm. He was in a house with 6 swimmers, and loved it. SOme are theme houses but most just open in housing lottery

Food-- pretty good, great variety. Most athletes choose Mega plan as food option-- this seems to be enough food for most of them. Teams tend to eat together at meals, partly due to all arriving together after practice. Good vegetarian options, always pastas, mexican, sandwiches, other things

I know the pool is very old, and in fact the next major building project on campus is a new pool and I think weight facilites. I think maybe 2 years is the projected date? Not sure. I think weight room good but nothing great-- but should be really good when new building opens

This is getting long but one more thing. If possible try to go on a recruiting trip in the fall. D3 can’t pay for your flight but if you can get there they will host you for 48 hours. DS did this-- flew in on a Thursday and did campus things-- tour, visited class, talked to admission, etc on Friday and also met team and went to a practice. I know they had several social events arranged so he could get to know the team. He then flew out on Saturday. This was very important for him-- he visited 4 school and then could compare the academics and also how he would fit in with the coach and team

Thanks for the great reply. UPS will definitely be a school I take a closer look at. Any other info you think I should know? I have very strong grades (4.0), test scores (35 ACT) and class rank (1) so I think I should have a good chance to get in.

Yes you should be admitted and should get some good merit aid

If you have not already sent an email to the coach you should do that and express interest in the program and school
