So, a few questions. I applied SCEA. I recently got a letter of recommendation (supplementary) from a research mentor. I did not mark "supplementary material" on the app I was not sure if I should have him send it or wait until I am (in all likelihood) deferred. He sent it already, but will Yale look at it, ignore it, or burn my app in a fiery explosion of "missed-deadline" rage (figuratively. Am I dead)?

Also, I will be taking the SAT on Saturday, and I recognize that I will not get my scores until the end of Dec, early Jan. However, if I should in fact be rejected, can I still cancel my order to send my scores to Yale (I know that this is after SCEA and wasn't expecting it to affect that)?

There’s no “figuratively” about it. The smoke coming out of the admissions building is from the furnace where they put every application that’s not absolutely perfect (and a few that are, just because they can).

In all seriousness, though, try calling. I don’t know if they can confirm receipt of the letter, but if you tell the office what happened, they might be able to give you a definitive answer on what would theoretically have happened to it.

Now, regarding your supplementary letter, I don’t think it will affect your chances for SCEA (either positively or negatively). They probably do not “burn” the letter or your application, but also will not consider it part of your app. I believe Yale files everything that it receives, so your letter should be good for RD.
