Questions please (:

okok, i know this is a subject that’s been talked about a lot for UPenn, but bare with me please.

My dad’s a Penn graduate (Ph.D in Computer Science), and I’ve heard from multiple people that he might not help me much in getting legacy recognition from the admissions office because he only attended the graduate school there and not the undergraduate schools (oh and I’ll be applying for the Huntsman Program, which has nothing to do with computer science).

true?

When I apply for the Huntsman Program, I’m thinking of applying with Korean as my language concentration, but is the fact that I am Korean a draw-back?

my dad did not even get a degree, but did a residency at the medical school. he is an alumni interviewer and has been told that they consider all legacies equally.

I think it'll count. Harvard, I think, is the only one that only counts undergraduate for legacy status.

Check out the legacy admission faq on the penn website:

They say it helps, but they are very vague about how much it helps:

*How important is the legacy tie in the admission process? *
There are multiple components of the application; the academic pieces (transcript, rigor of courses, testing) are considered the most important. The legacy tie is a positive supplement to your application. Being a legacy is not reason enough to gain admission to Penn; every student who gets accepted to Penn does so on their own merit.

It helps most if you apply ED (again, they don't say how much)

Is there an advantage for legacies to apply Early Decision?
Legacies who apply Early Decision maximize the benefit of their alumni tie. Since Early Decision is binding, however, it is only encouraged to apply early if Penn is the applicant's first choice institution.

Is the legacy tie considered at all during regular decision?
Yes. Family affiliation with Penn is noted in all undergraduate applications - Early Decision, Regular Decision, and Transfer.

And here are some admission stats:
