Questions/Pre-Frosh Portal

As the Class of 2011 got to find out last year, some of us students started a Columbia wiki.

Here's some stuff to check out

1) School Songs
2) First Year Housing
2) Columbia books
3) Traditions (incomplete)
4) School symbols/url

It's a little messy, but click around. Ask questions and I'll try to answer them.

Hello, I’m a SEAS

I’m curious about the classes we take in freshman year.
Also, I have never played Cello in my life, but I would like to start learning it.
(I played piano for 10+ years and violin for 3 years).
Is there a music lesson(Cello) at Columbia for beginners?

don’t worry about classes until you hit orientation. it’ll be much more eloquently explained to you in the big bulletin package you get in your first few days.

as for music lessons, they exist but the ones in the Columbia music dept are in high demand, and music majors get preference. however, teachers college up on 120th has a music dept as well, and a bunch of good instructors (at least in piano, dunno explicitly about cello). And there’s an exchange program such that SEAS pays for it and gives you credits. Took me till senior year to find out about that program, so look into it early and you’ll be squeezing some extra value out of that tuition.

keep the questions coming, you’ll get more honest and complete answers here than in the sanitized welcome websites.

Den, you know if we have any arrangement with MSM? They have tons of free concerts, master classes and stuff. [Manhattan School of Music: Calendar](http://www.msmnyc.edu/calendar/index.asp)

i’m not aware of anything, but that doesnt’ mean it doesn’t exist. the people to call are probably on the MSM side.

i don’t think MSM has that many connections to columbia aside from an emergency housing loan of space they made to house some barnard students.

Since the package we got only had our decision letter and general college information, are we going to be getting the rest of the materials the same time that regular decision admits get theirs?

When do we need to pay for the tuitions and stuff?
(Not the $500 one)

Do we pay per semester? per year?
How and when do we get the I-20 forms?

Do we have to withdraw the applications that we already sent to other schools after getting in ED?

The full package comes later. I’ll get back to with a firmer response.

You won’t get billed for tuition until August. Bills come monthly, but tuition and fees generally get split up evenly between both semesters, and appear on the August and January bills, give or take. What you actually have to do depends on your financial aid package.

I have no idea about I-20’s, you should probably call the admissions office and ask them about it.

Yes you have to withdraw your other applications. Last I checked, that’s a requirement of most ED contracts (“if accepted, you must immediately withdraw all other applications” or something to that effect.)

i didn’t get a cent for financial aid. UGH. my dad’s going to have to pay everything because he doesn’t want loans. i’m trying to sign up for scholarships here and there..

bumping this.
