for teacher recs, Duke wants only teachers from 11 or 12 grade. Is that the end-all-be-all? I know a sophomore eng teacher really well. Can I use her? I just submitted this question to Duke, but I wanted to hear if anyone else has had this issue before.

also, i haven't started on the why duke essay, and the Dec 10 deadline is coming up. What's more important: Why Duke or interview? What if I send my supplement and then send in the essay later? Duke says on their site that they will accomodate changes to the application after it has been submitted.

Teacher Recs: I wouldn't use her. Wait for Duke's answer (obviously).

"Why Duke:" Probably more important. Then again, it really depends on your writing ability.

I would say that just to be safe, get recs from more current (11-12) teachers AND use the sophomore English teacher as an additional recommendation if you think it would be exceptional. About the essay or the interview, I would say a really good Why Duke essay would have the edge over the interview. That said, chances are good that you will still have an interview opportunity even if it's submitted after the Dec. 10th deadline. That happens sometimes.

I used a rec from my 10th grade AP Bio teacher and I got accepted. If it's a really strong rec, go ahead and use it.
