@shawbridge THANK YOU so much. Very helpful!!!
@Corinthian, my kid’s CC disability coordinator has been great, but she had never dealt with the CB before and wanted us to take the lead (it was also finals week when we were doing the paperwork). She wrote up a detailed letter, explaining why he gets double time there, but I dunno. Bummed to hear SPS is not “enough” to qualify for extra time. And I just had a brief chat with the CB DSP folks and it wasn’t very encouraging, to put it mildly.
Sorry to hear that about your conversation. I’m afraid you are being prejudiced by the unwillingness of your SSD coordinator to submit the request on your behalf and say your kid gets extra time as part of a formal plan. If she does it and uploads a formal plan, it’s like a short cut and TCB defers to it. If you do it yourself then they will study your neuropsych report (Weschler, Woodcock-Johnson, etc) and make their own judgment. The first time we did it TCB looked at D19’s scores and said she could read well enough on her own. But after the change in policy in 2017, I was able to reapply on the basis of what was in her 504 and got quick approval. I literally sat next to our SSD coordinator the 2nd time she submitted the request for us and watched her computer screen and it was pretty simple. A few fields to fill out and she uploaded the 504 plan. Even if someone had never done it before, it’s easy, it’s her job and she should do it for you.
I think the key is that rather than a narrative/persuasive letter about why he should get double time, the SSD coordinator needs to upload a document styled as a formal accommodation plan that says he gets extra time from the CC.
Is your kiddo finishing his HS graduation requirements at the community college? Or is he a matriculated student at the CC?
@thumper1 he’s a matriculated CC student (never went to high school). Due to his unconventional K-12 background, several colleges have told us he’d probably need a SAT or ACT score when applying.
@Corinthian, the DSP counselor at his community college has been spectacularly supportive of my son the past 3 years, so I have nothing but positive feelings toward her. She’s counseling 200 disabled students, so she is a superhero in my eyes! But she’s made it pretty clear that lobbying for SAT accomo’s is not something a community college DSP office does; I definitely did not get the impression she would register on the CB site for the online process, which is why we sent it Priority Mail instead.
I guess I’ll just keep crossing my fingers and toes…and start thinking how best to appeal if he gets denied.
Good luck! I definitely hope it works out. Please come back and let us know what happened.
@Corinthian and everyone: Just got the letter from the CB and…YES!!! SO RELIEVED!!!
Granted, they approved 50% extra time, not 100%, but I’m not complaining. After my call to the CB today, I was REALLY worried he wasn’t going to get anything.
My son’s reaction to all this? A mild shrug (then back to his homework). =))
Thanks, all, for helping me through this!
Excellent news!
@Corinthian I just realized I didn’t read this part of your message very well: “I think the key is that rather than a narrative/persuasive letter about why he should get double time, the SSD coordinator needs to upload a document styled as a formal accommodation plan that says he gets extra time from the CC.”
Sorry, I should have said there was not only a detailed letter but also the DSP office’s formal accommodation plan (they don’t call it a 504 or IEP in college and somehow my brain didn’t recognize it as a “plan” at first).
In any case, I guess that, plus all the raw data from his WAIS and WJ, was all they needed after all.
