Do majors influence admission decisions? If one is not admitted into the chosen major, is one rejected from the school?

The largest majority of students are "undeclared". But to answer your question, it depends.

If you are applying to an impacted major, yeah, it can play into admissions decisions. If you are applying to a particular college within a university, same response.

Just remember that most students in high school who actually have some idea as to the direction in which they intend to go, may very well figure out in their first quarter/semester at a UC that their focus was way too narrow, or that it wasn't the fit/thrill they thought it would be and decide to change. My friend's daughter started off at Cal with the intention to become a doctor. O Chem killed her. And she found a new interest in politics at Cal that took her in a completely different direction. She graduated in History and is now an attorney in Los Angeles.
