Questions regarding contests

I'm fairly naive about the "AMC" competitions, and writing scholarships.

I did do research for the writing competitions, but do I have to start it during the school year? None of my friends know when/how to actually start this process. I don't think it's common at my school. Do I just ask my counselor to be my coordinator for the writing competitions? What exactly is the AMC? Do I have to be in my school's math club to participate?

I want endeavor to win, never won a "competition", lol.

Thanks for any help I can get.

What writing competitions are you talking about?

i’m not sure what writing competitions you’re referring to. but regarding the AMC, you can take it if your school has registered for it. if you school doesn’t do it, you should speak to a math teacher or principal and ask them to help you register for the exam somehow. anyway, if you end up scoring in the top 5% (i think), you are invited to take the AIME. :)

Anyone in a given school can take the AMC, if it is given at your school. The AMC is a pretty easy test, thought scoring above 100 is sometimes a matter of luck more than skill. There are two versions of the test -the AMC 10 for sophomores and freshmen, and the AMC 12 for juniors and seniors. If you score above 100 on the AMC 12 as a sophomore or freshman, that’s a definite added plus on your app (but I don’t believe you can qualify for the AIME as a soph/frosh). If you score above 100 as a junior/senior, you can take the AIME, but I warn you - it’s very, VERY long. I took it as a junior, and only got ~4 problems right, which isn’t too bad, but a score of ~8 would be more application worthy.

For the writing competitions, are you talking about Scholastic’s competition, or the NCTE writing competition? These are the only ones I know of that require mentors.

…you can definitely do AIME as freshman and soph. I’ve been doing it since 8th grade and my friend has done USAMO since 8th grade.

Writing competition wise, I think the NCTE is the most well known, but there are other ones, like the Peace essay thing adn etc..heh, not much of a writing person myself, so I can’t tell you much ;)

“…you can definitely do AIME as freshman and soph.”

Yeah, see, teenage sclerosis is kicking in already.

eh? What does that have to do with sclerosis? :S It’s probably a really clever statement that makes fun of me, but I can’t figure it out…I thought sclerosis was a motor neuron disease thingy. Hahah, here I am proving your point, hahah ; )

Nah, I was just referring to my loss of cognitive ability :)

ohhhhh. I see. Same here, I should probably get OFF CC and get ON my applications, but meh, this site is quite addicting. Even when there’s is absolutely nothing to do other than pressing the refresh button, heheh.

** Math **
AIME is an invitation only math contest; you qualify based on your
score on the AMC12. If your school does not provide the AMC12
(usually given twice in the month of February) there will be schools
in your state where you can register with the coordinator to take it.

Check [here[/url] for more details on the AMC12.

If you love Math try to form a small team and compete in the likes of

[This link](<a href=“Art of Problem Solving”>http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/Wiki/index.php/List_of_United_States_high_school_mathematics_competitions</a>) from the folks at AOPS is a decent list of Math competitions for High School students.

** Writing **

The [River of Words](<a href=“River Of Words - Virtual Counselor”>River Of Words - Virtual Counselor) writing contest is also well perceived.

The [National Council of English teachers Award](http://www.ncte.org/about/awards/student) is major as is the [William Faulkner Creative Writing Award](About Patty Friedman – Words and Music).

Also the NFAA has a Category where you can submit writing for its annual ARTS awards which could lead to
Presidential Scholar (of the Arts).
