Hello College Confidential:
I am currently a full time student at a public college. I will transfer to a new college next semester. A few days ago, some family situation came up and I will not be able to return back to school for the rest of this semester. (fall 18) I am currently receiving federal and state financial aids. I believe that my financial aids will be reduced for next semester if I was to drop all of my classes now. Because I heard that grades will not be carried over to the new college and I have already sent in my transfer credit evaluation. I wonder would that be a good idea to just hang on to all of my classes and fail them and take them again next semester in the new college?
If you can’t meet with your advisor and the dean in person, talk with them on the phone on Monday. Find out what they recommend that you do. You may have several options availalbe. This is not something that you want to mess up. Failing everything will affect you SAP, and could mean that you aren’t eligible for federal financial aid. Withdrawing from everything might mean you end up owing a lot of money to the current institution so that you can’t get a transcript and you can’t enroll anywhere else. You might be able to get Incompletes in some or all of your classes. You would need to finish up the work on your own, but you would be able to eventually take the final exams and get grades. Your advisor and the college dean also may have ideas for working with your family situation. Depending on what the exact challenge is, they may be able to connect you with resources that will lift some of your burden.
Wishing you all the best.
