Questions regarding The Shepherd School of Music

Does anyone have experience with applying and auditioning for the Piano department? Do you know of any students who have transfered into Rice after one or two years at another conservatory? Any impressions of the faculty.

Also, the website says transfer students need to have at least a 3.2 GPA in college classes. My son has a 3.55. Hopefully he can bring it up. I know that Rice is extremely competitive, but is the audition weighed more heavily than the college record?

Thanks in advance for any information you can share with me.

I can't answer specifically for Rice but almost all music schools consider the audition to be most important. Beyond that they have minimums for the gpa and scores (at least for freshmen). The factor that makes music probably the toughest school at most universities is a general rule of limiting the number of talented kids by the instrument they play. Rice has about 25 to 50 kids in a class I believe. You may want to also audition at other schools to have alternate choices. Good luck
