--Are any of you taking a SAT subject test of your native language? Such as if you are French, are you taking SAT II French?

--Did you take 2+ years of a foreign language, which is not english, in school?

--Is the foreign language requirement, really critical in the application process?

Although I'm not the fluentist Korean speaker/reader in the world, I was going to take the SAT II Korean.

But some universities say that it's not a good idea and that the adcoms will be not impressed with me, even if I get a full 800 because it's not really what I studied for - only what I grew up with.
They said that an 800 Korean will put them off.

I took 1/2 year of French and Japanese. Not even close to the 2 year requirement.
So, Im self studying French right now and planning to take the SAT II French in 2 years time.
But on CC, I see that some people are actually taking the SAT II language subject as their native language.

Should I just take SAT II Korean? Or keep with the SAT II French?

I think I'll get about a 650 on French.. and above 750 with Korean.

PLEASE ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS> I'M SO CONFUSED

Please excuse my ignorance, but I have some questions -stupid ones they may be- regarding SAT II language tests. Is what nofx says true, that if you're a native speaker, it's just natural that you do EXTREMELY well on standardized tests in your language? And if that's the case, shouldn't getting an 800 in either Verbal or writing tests be a given as well if your native language is English?

When I was still in my country, I never (by never, I mean, "not even once") aced any kind of tests or quizzes in language study. It still takes a lot of skills to get good grades, despite the fact that what we're learning is "just" our native language.

Why, yes, I'm a Korean, and I'm really stupid about Korean literature/lauguage classes here. Yet, I'm confident that I would score 800 on SAT2 language test, because it's EXTREMELY EASY! While Verbal or Writing tests certainly require something more than fluency, SAT2 Korean language test is basically asking students "if" they can use the language, not how they use it. But I didn't take the test, because plainly it's not a foreign lauguage for me, so I thought colleges would take me as non-initiative student.

take the SAT II French. A 650 in French will impress the adcoms more than a 750 in Korean. When I read the profile of some French kid who scored 800 in SAT II French, you know what I think? what the hell did he took that for? it shows nothing
