Firstly, are short term units always supposed to be related to your major, or is it okay to take a course that is completely unrelated to your area of study? Also, I’ve read that students may complete a maximum of 3 short term units. So what do students do for their fourth short term?

I noticed that there were not any community service-oriented organizations. Is this because everything related to community service is part of the Service Learning program? Does the Service Learning program also provide opportunities for those who want to volunteer in projects that are not related to their studies?

Short term units can be related to your major but don't have to be. I know some majors like history and math require you to complete a certain short term units in order to graduate but a lot of the time short term can be used to take a fun class that will get rid of some of the gen eds. You are required to take short term units two years but can take a max of three. During the other time, students may be abroad on JYA or JSA, doing an internship or working, or just getting a jump start on the summer.
As for community service organizations, look at the Harward center which has a lot of the opportunities in Lewiston , http://www.bates.edu/harward-center.xml. There are a lot of things that you can do in the area such as Bates Buddies, Big Brother Big Sister, soup kitchens and tons other stuff. There was even a day devoted to service one day in november or so.
