Questions

1) I want to apply early to Stony Brook, but there is no early application choice. If I apply as soon as possible, will it be favorable? Will I be looked at as wanting to actually go to the school? I'm asking because it's my #1 choice.

2) If accepted into the school and I choose the same campus/program area as a friend, can we choose to dorm together? My friend and I were hoping to get a suite.

3) How strict are the "requirements" for some programs? For example, I did bad my freshman year, therefore lowering my GPA below what it should appear as.

4) If I send an application for honors and accelerated med program, will I still also be reviewed for normal acceptance? (so would I be denied for honors and accelerated but still be offered regular classes?)

5) When is the absolute soonest I can hear from Stony Brook regarding the status of my application?

6) How generous is Stony Brook with money? My family's tax returns this year will not properly reflect what they're making when I will be enrolled in college, which would not necessarily middle-class standards anyway. (a member of the family got laid off)

1) When you apply has no bearing on your application decision. (Fortunately or unfortunately.)

2) Possibly, yes, but there are a lot of factors that go into housing assignments, so we can’t guarantee that. We’re tweaking the Undergraduate College assignment process this year, and that will impact housing assignments. Re-ask this question in the spring and I’ll be able to give you a better answer.

3) Depends on the program. Some are more particular than others (engineering, for example, or music, which requires an audition), but from a pragmatic perspective, we’re looking most heavily at your more recent coursework, so 9th grade won’t play as much of a factor.

4) Yes. We consider your application for general admission first, THEN pass admitted students over to the honors programs for consideration. So your admission to those programs has no bearing at all on your admission to Stony Brook.

5) The last few years, we’ve sent out our first round of decisions in mid-January. I don’t know what the plan is this year yet.

6) Hard to say. I’m told we’re one of the most generous SUNY schools when it comes to financial aid, but I honestly can’t say, because much of financial aid does come down to your individual situation. My advice would be to contact the Financial Aid office and sit down with someone there to go over everything, including recent events that might skew tax returns.

Hope this helps!

Okay thanks, I have a few more to throw at ya:

 1. Regarding the gym that was just established- Can you elaborate what kind of equipment will be in there?

2) Will the gym membership be included in tuition or will I pay separately? If separately, how much?

3) I have credits from Kingsborough, CSI and SUNY Albany from “College Now” courses and other college-level courses that do not have an AP test.
ex: College Russian, Sociology 101, Science 101
Will these credits be accepted, or are they likely to be?

4) As far as the Medical Programs go- how different are the programs “Engineering Scholars for Medicine” and “Scholars for Medicine”? I’m very interested in becoming a surgeon, but I do have a great love for engineering.

1) Just about anything you can imagine. Everything’s brand new.

2) It’s included for all undergraduates. Grad students and faculty/staff would have to pay.

3) Likely, yes. We’d need copies of transcripts.

4) They’re the same program on the practical level, just that some spots are reserved for engineering applicants.

1) What are the minimum requirements to be even looked at, at SBU?

2) My GPA is about a 3.47 and my SAT is a 1250 (All 3 Sections) 880 Math & Reading. Are those grades good enough to get looked at? I am planning on studying Languages & Linguistics.

3) I am registered for the ACT & Italian SAT II in December. Will this help my chances of getting accepted?

4) I also do alot of Community Service I am dedicated to, will that have an effect on my admission?

~Thank You!

1) and 2) We have no strict “minimum” for admission, but I don’t/can’t/won’t “chance” people here. That said – our average SAT range is a 550-650 reading and 590-690 math, so you’re well below what we’re really looking for there.

3) We do not, in any way, require the SAT subject tests; but the ACT may help if it’s better than your SAT score.

4) Community service is always a good thing.

I scored really high in the Math section but a little low on the CR section will the math be looked at more because I want to go into a math/science major? I am also Hispanic if that helps my situation.
