Questions!

Hi guys!
Okay so you know those threads where they're like "I just finished one year ask me questions!" this is one of them. Except it's only been one semester BUT I know when I got in (which was exactly last year) all I wanted to know was about move in and class registration and freshman dorms (yes, room service is gone), fafsa, making friends, things to bring (no you don't need a mini fridge) and stuff so if you have any questions about things of that nature, ask away, either here or inbox or whatever since I just went through it.
My advice to you: JOIN THE 2017 FACEBOOK GROUP! Seriously do it! There are upperclassmen in the group who can answer tons of questions for you and you all get to know each other better and make friends before CI or find a roommate before you move in. Just please don't be weird of rude because honestly, no one forgets that.

And don't add every single person in the group because I just deleted like 100, no joke we all added each other I wonder if half of those people even go here.

Once again CONGRATS GUYS YOU ALL DESERVED IT!

is thurston worth it? or should i just apply for the potomac house since i am a EDI applicant

Thurston isn’t as bad as people say. It really depends. I mean it gets really gross sometimes and you kinda might not want to put your hands on the elevator walls and you’ll hate it in the beginning but it’s actually a lot of fun and theres a bank of america ATM in the lobby if you need it.
But I live in potomac! I love it, but thats because I lucked out and got a handicap room so mine is a lot bigger than the average. The regular rooms are kinda narrow and some are bigger than others. Honestly, if I had to choose again I’d pick potomac even if I got a smaller room. It’s quieter overall but it really depends on the floor you live on and the people you’re around. And almost everyone i’ve met here is ED1. Aside from getting in early, 1st choice in housing is really here the ED1 benefits end so choose wisely!

Is the chance of getting a dorm of your choice affected by when, after being accepted, you submit your deposit? Will you have less chance of a good dorm if you wait until May 1? Do some students get housed on the Vern if they don’t want it? And are they adding any FB freshman options since they are eliminating some for construction of the superdorm? Thanks for any insight you can share!

I found an answer about replacement rooms during construction in a Hatchet article … it looks like construction won’t start for a year. [Plans set in motion for dorm merge - The GW Hatchet](http://www.gwhatchet.com/2012/05/21/plans-set-in-motion-for-dorm-merge/)

I’d still like to know more about how requests are processed (first come first served or random), if you know. Thanks.

thanks! how is the social scene in potomac. i like the party but i also like to study so is there a good balance?

@amandasmom: ED1 is first choice, then ED2, then RD. Doesn’t matter when you submit your deposit, although I would do it before the housing portal closes. They don’t start assigning anything until the portal is closed, but I’d do it as soon as possible. Yes! Lots of people get housed on the Vern when they don’t want to actually. It’s mostly RD students though, or students who filled out the housing app after the deadline, or Honors students (however, on e of the guys who lives across the hall from me doesn’t live on the Vern so sometimes you can get around it). If you do get placed on the Vern, its not so bad. Just get on room swap. A lot of people went home for various reasons this semester so some people who were placed on the vern got to move to foggy bottom.

And yeah, like the article said, Layafatte will reopen (you guys are so lucky, because its beautiful) and more freshmen will be placed on the vern.

Zach: The social scene is great. I made lots of friends the first week. Oh yeah, make sure you do DC Bound or CBC or Adventure Bound (though thats kind of expensive). I have a great balance here. I can study in my room and then party in thurston or study and party here. And it’s amazing if you have class on E street the next day because then you can just roll out of bed, get ready and walk down the street for class.

Thanks. That’s very helpful.

Pre-College tip!

DO DC BOUND/ CBC/ ADVENTURE BOUND!!!
I did DC Bound and I loved it! You move in early, make friends before the whole rush of people get to school and it’s tons of fun! DC bound takes you around the city, CBC is community service based and Adventure bound is more outdoors stuff like whitewater rafting or something. I’m still close with some of my DC Bound group members and I might apply to be a DC Bound guide for the class of 2018.
The description for all of them will come out when you can register for CI but just keep it in mind that if you’re not so quick at making friends, one of these programs will be great :)

Daughter got in ED1 as did her best friend. They submitted housing requests in Feb and though they were supposed to, they did NOT get their choice. Ended up in Thurston which is a crowded zoo. Moved to singles in Mithell.

The Vern is a great campus w new buildings and spacious rooms and just minutes to Georgetown and Foggy Bottom. the Vern shuttle runs constantly. Dont be afraid of it.

I’ve heard j-street has annoying hours…what are the best places to eat out / order in?

J street does have really annoying hours. Opens at 11am, closes at 8pm on weekdays. and runs from 11am - 3pm on fridays. closed on weekends. its sad really.

there are food trucks which now take GWorld! Carvings has nice food but it gets addicting and they will eat away your Colonial Cash first semester. the food court in ivory has Pita Pit, Baskin Robbins, Dunkin Donuts, this buffet-ish/Carvings type place with random food, and Potbelly. Campus fresh (in HelWell) has good smoothies and sandwiches/burritos. There’s Au Bon Pain, AND CHIPOTLE IS OPENING ON I STREET !! There’s also TGI Fridays on I street. And Johnny Rockets on some other street … H? E? not sure. I order in from dominos and Devon and Blakely all the time, and order Chinese from Peking Garden. There’s Crepeaway, Boloco, Baja Fresh, Panera and seriously tons of other places though those are a little bit of a walk since they’re on like 19th and L or something.

Moral of the story, you wont go hungry here until you go broke. And at that point you’ll be forced to use your J street money which will be useful during finals week when you realize that Carvings ate all your Colonial Cash :)

haha I guess I won’t be so worried about trying to blow through the J street money first semester. If I get in (knock on wood) haha.
Alright, so what about greek life?
Are there stereotypes for each frat/sorority?

yeah but definitely use it second semester because it won’t roll over after that.

Umm greek life is pretty noticeable here but if you’re not in it you wont be left out of much.

I have no idea what the stereotypes are as I’m not in greek life but I do know that there’s Panhell, IFC and Multicultural Greek orgs so you have lots of options. Apart from that, I have no idea.

Thanks so much!

Another question: What was your admissions process like?

What attracted you to GW, did you visit and how other ways did you show interest, where else did you apply, was GW your top…yadda yadda yadda…

There is something on the housing portal that says the application won’t open until April 23rd. Is that new? Because Dowzerw said their friends did it in Feb…

What’s better AEPI or ZBT???

More popular and respected

Sent from my iPhone

WOW im late, so you guys either gotten into GW or not. BUT i will still answer your questions.

treschic8: I visited GW randomly, because I wanted to visit Georgetown at first and I hated it, so we decided to visit GW and I LOVED it! I sat in on a class, toured, did an overnight (much later though), the whole nine. GW was my top choice, Tufts second, BU third, NEU fourth. I was planning on Tufts ED2 in case GW didnt accept me ED1 but I got in and didnt apply. I showed TONS of interest by visiting, doing the programs for Deans Council for Multicultural recruitment (which I’m now a member of), and emailing my regional director and also the (awesome) lady who interviewed me.

Sammvp1: yes. the housing portal will not open until much later because it actually just opened for us earlier in the month and we dont even have our assignments yet and also, you guys need to go to april visit day (which I will be helping out on) first and tour. Your assignment wont be up until like mid may.

13all94: no idea!

ALSO: for you guys thinking about internships, dont. at least not now. You really should get a feel of the campus and your workload now and just join orgs at CI (which I will be tabling at  ). I was a member of like 5 orgs and I joined on the E-Board for an org that started this spring. Sidenote: that is really the only way to be on the E-Board of something your freshman year, if it’s a start up or you know someone. Anyway, for next year I’ll be on the E-Board for like 2 maybe 3 orgs and a member of another 3 with a 16 credit load and work and I KNOW im stretching myself too thin but thats just me lol.

JOIN organizations first, go to meetings, join one of their committees (i was on fundraising committee for one org and event planning of another) and see how the orgs run first. E-Board is no small task lol. I just got on E-Board for an org for next fall and I’m already stressed out. But once you join them, esp committees, you’ll gain experience in things that you can put on your resume for internship applications. Remember, you’re going against applications of soph, juniors and seniors who have done way more. Unless you have connections, then you’ll be set. But still you might be too busy to enjoy your freshman year which will be your BEST yr because its the only time you can fool around and make silly mistakes and blame it on the fact that you’re a freshman :)
