So i just got accepted to Grinnell today, (i've heard that they dont' give much money, but i received about 39,000 in scholarships/grants so they dont seem that bad)
anyways, i was wondering if anyone from grinnell could tell me what there is to do at grinnell when NOT studying?
i've been researching the campus, and apparently the town of grinnell is only 2.5 miles wide(according to googlemaps) and also only has about 9,000 people in it....
I'm from SLC, UT which admittedly isn't the biggest city ever, but i'm not exactly sure i'd stay sane in such a small town. So yeah...i was wondering what the Grinnell campus had to offer? also how far away is the nearest city?(from what i can tell, the nearest town is newton, and it doesn't seem much bigger than grinnell)

There isn't a major city nearby. If I'm not mistaken Iowa City and Des Moines are both about an hour away. Grinnell students entertain themselves on campus, which isn't to say that they don't entertain themselves. There are parties, concerts, movies, and all sorts of events to take advantage of on campus, and it doesn't seem like anybody complains about having nothing to do, if anything they complai about not being able to fit it all in.

I got 39,000 also, but that leaves me with $8500 a year in loans.. so when I graduate, it's like $34,000
Even so, I'm willing to pay for that because it's GRINNELL!

I pay about 40,000/year(including everything...) for my child to attend Grinnell. It is worth every penny. Of course those loans won't be 'fun' but those of us who are paying full freight know you are getting a huge bargain. Do you not feel you should have any fiscal responsibility for your education??

Grinnell is not as much about the surroundings providing entertainment, as it is about the establishment providing entertainment for you. Grinnell, knowing that its location is the greatest dissuading fact for application and retention of students, throws a great deal of money into providing entertainment on campus each week, and most thoroughly each weekend.

Lectures and odd items happen during the week -- don't forget sports as well. On weekends, you get a couple of movies, usually one or two musical acts, and an occasional dance. In four years at Grinnell, this endless supply of concerts permitted me to never hanker to drive to Iowa City (U of I) or Des Moines (Drake) for entertainment. I may have been (am still) a bore, but I grew up in major urban areas and had a taste for cultural events.

Some names I remember off the top of my head who came: Springsteen, Police, Ramones, RR Kirk, Ravi Shankar. . . There were also dance recitals by pros and students, the student-run plays, and student musical recitals. And, when all of that could not entice you to go out and brave the tundra's viscious winds, you hung out in the cozy dorms.
