I am a currently third year student with the University of Florida and I completely forgot about this website. If anyone has any questions, I will be happy to answer anything that I can.

I am double majoring in Civil Engineering and History. Its a weird combo, but I have a major with something that I know will help me with a career, and something that I am passionate with.

I will be entering Summer B this upcoming June and will major in Economics with minors in Business Administration and Philosophy in preparation for corporate law

I know this will seem like a lame question, but how hard is it to stay away from parties with ridiculous drinking and whatever? I know UF is a "party school", but I'm one of those pious people that everyone hates because I don't drink and I don't particularly like being around too much of it.

My advice would be to just not go to those parties. Even if you go, dont drink. No one can pressure you to. There are a lot of people like you, so try to make friends with those type of people. I'm like you and I don't drink and I was surprised at the beginning why people wanted to actually get drunk; still dont understand. However, I have never had a problem with my friends respecting my decision.

yea same here, a couple of drinks is fine, though i just try to avoid it completely. for me the definition of a party is loud music and lots of ppl dancing (not sure if its a miami thing) and from what i hear the parties at UF are mostly just people standing around and drinking till they drop. i hope i can find people who think like me.

Wow, you guys are crazy. Florida is considered a party school, but thats mainly all the frat guys and sorority girls. There are plenty of people at Florida that may never go to a party. Just find the people that you like to hang out with and go from there. Like it was said before, no one can make you drink.

not that i was accepted to UF, lol, but i will still be attending sante fe so ill be in gainesville and in the same environment. not trying to give off the wrong impression, but, how strict are they about underage drinking???? here in miami its not hard to get ur hand on some boos but its not a walk in the park either. i am one of the few here who do like drinking occasionally and stick to the "if my gov will send me to war i will drink!" motto. lol.

If you want to find a place and drink, you can. The clubs and bars card people, but that does not stop fake IDs and parties in apartments, which there are a lot of. There was a recent article in our paper that talked about how police are cracking down on fake IDs and underage drinking, but that was on the main strip of clubs and bars. Parties are good, but they can get broken up by the cops, and its a slap on the wrist. I am not saying that cops won't do anything, but most of the time cops will just tell everyone to leave. Gainesville is overall pretty lax about drinking. On campus is a big no-no.

thanks for the info. sounds pretty much like miami. people care but you mostly get a slap on the wrist if you get caught. and i sort of agree. if the police decided to really crack down on underage drinking i would happily stop if it would stop all the underage morons that drink and get stupid as hell.

rainydysndmondys,
Why so negative about UF? You know there are other places you can attend right?

I'm not negative about UF. I'm really excited to go, but I'm also really nervous. I don't think it's unreasonable for a freshman to be concerned about safety and about making friends who don't ZOMGPARTYHXC. I have no close friends going with me, so it's scary to be going to a place with 50,000 people virtually alone [yes, I know, I'm not the first, whatever, but you should understand why I have concerns].

back on topic...lol

I actually watched a GPD TV special on this. The punishment if caught with underage drink is a night in jail and if you are under 18, they call your parents. But this only happens when they actually catch you with a drink and check your ID. As stated before, dont drink on-campus.

Drinking is not a priority at UF. If people want to drink, they do. If people don't want to drink, they won't. People are not going to force you to do something that you don't wish to do. There will be plenty of people that want to study, but some people like to take it easy at night (or they are bogged down with homework =P ).
