Hey. I have a few questions about admissions, and terms used on these forums.

First, what is the difference between ED and EA? ED=Early Decision, and EA=Early action, correct? Can someone explain these two if there's a distinct difference or state if it's the same thing and I'm just a forum noob. :P

Also, are you limited to one school application using Early decision? Or can you apply to multiple schools using early decision and simply call off your other applications after getting into the colleges which accepts you first?

Also, what is URM? What is it's significance? I've seen that term used alot on these forums, but haven't been able to figure out what it means exactly.

If there are any other unique terms used on these forums, feel free to post and explain them. I'm new to these forums and it's alot of fun reading the comments and discussions, but I'm a bit lost sometimes with some of these terms lol.

Thanks!

ED = If you get accepted into a school Early Decision, you have to go to that school.
EA = you apply early but if you make it you don't have to go to it

Yes you can only apply to one school ED and I bet you can tell why

I believe URM = underrepresented minors but I'm not completely sure

Thanks for the clarification.

So what exactly makes someone fall into the URM category? Ethnicity, region, or both? :S

I'm half African American, and half Greek and live in Florida. Am I a URM applicant?

Is being in the URM an "advantage" in a sense? :P

I'm not really sure about anything having to do with URM because with me being a white girl and not a "first generation" student, I haven't needed to know anything about it.

I am Jewish though so I am interested in the religion part.

There are two types of EA, non-binding EA and SCEA (single choice EA).

With EA you can apply wherever else you want, but often times you don't get that "edge" over RD. With SCEA you may not apply to any other university under ED or SCEA, and you get that "edge."

Allowable:
-ED, EA, EA, EA, EA, EA, etc.
-SCEA, EA, EA, EA, EA, etc.
-EA, EA, EA, EA

NOT allowable:
-ED, SCEA
-ED, ED
-SCEA, SCEA
-LSD

URM (under-represented minority) applies to ethnicity and race, not religion. If you're Black or Latino (regardless of your country of origin) you are URM. If you're Middle Eastern (I believe) you're URM. If you're from any country that's under-represented you're URM (meaning not Western Europe).

This is not to be confused with ORM (over-represented minority). If you're Asian (unless we're talking about an under-represented country) you're ORM, meaning you have a disadvantage at many schools.

NOT allowable:
-LSD

Love it.

I forgot about SCEA! Thank you for the information!

Thank you for the information everyone! :)
