Questions?

I don't think there is a seperate set of statistics for recruited athletes but consider that most of the school does at least some type of athletic activity (varsity, club, IM) and that though we are a small school, we field varsity or club teams in almost every sport (often with duplication) and finally that we are division III.

Keeping all of that in mind, being a recruited athlete helps, but not that much - every recruited athlete who is here very much deserves to be here academically.

There are definitel some pretty stupid lacrosse players here. However, like I said, that lacrosse player that I know had pretty good stats and he got rejected EDI. Our athletes overall are really good students-- <a href="http://athletics.wlu.edu/sports_releases/0506releases/sa106.htm%5B/url%5D">http://athletics.wlu.edu/sports_releases/0506releases/sa106.htm</a>
Musictoad, I'm assuming you're a musician. You may be interested to know that by Fall 2006, the brand new $25 million + music and arts center will be completed. Recording studios, practice rooms, awesome concert halls with excellent acoustics, etc. As a musician, I am pretty pumped about this! Hopefully it will help attract more artsy kids to the school.

And you know what that generally means, Morgan? More liberals! Ahahaha!

;)

Unfortunately, the "toad" should be emphasized--music ability is nil. My sister is the musician in the family and is pushing me to ED to Vandy next year.

I am the bball player and sent a form to the coach but haven't heard back--dont know if I will. I'll wait a while to contact him and see if he received it.

In order to visit and interview, I'd have to travel almost 1200 miles but I'd get to see the campus and where it is located. I go to a real small school and live in suburbia--I am not sure if I want to go to a rural area for college or attend a smaller college. Still deciding. Individual attention may be a deciding factor.

Only one kid from my HS applied to WLU from the last five years. Admitted. It isn't well known out here as compared to Davidson (not that many know of it either). No one knows about Hampden Sydney but I like the hunting/fishing/sport aspect of that school.

How does the admit com know about a high school and how they grade? My school prides itself on not ranking and not weighting for AP/Honors. Which would make me think the SAT or ACT takes on way too much importance. We are limited to the number of schools we can apply to. They force us to prune our list.

You've done a great job of conveying what WLU is all about. Have you thought about blogging for admissions?

Along with your transcript, your school sends a "school profile" which gives pretty much all the information about your school that the adcoms will need. Of course, if it is a really elite high school known nationwide (Exeter, Stuyvesant, etc) then even that is not necessary. At any rate, be confident that they will know all about your school when they look at your app/

Hoops are big at HSC.Football, lacrosse, and baseball are also very successful.Viewing the web site, reading about the school in The Fiske Guide,Princeton Review's 361 Best Colleges,ISI's Choosing The Right College, etc. will give you some idea of HSC.Contact the basketball coach and see what happens.Make sure you look at the financial incentives in the honors program.GO TIGERS!!!

Frankly, HSC is a joke compared to W&L. You may consider it as an extreme safety, but if you are looking at schools like W&L and Vandy you might consider something like Rhodes or Sewanee for your safety.

Anyway, as far as recognition goes, I'm from Maine. One of three people in the entire state in the school. The only person to EVER attend W&L from my HS. W&L is very much respected in the professional world, especially in the south; you shouldn't let the fact that it isn't well known in your area affect your decision.

As far as ranking and weighting, my HS was the same. I had a 91 avg with all the hardest courses, and was in the third decile of my class (my school only ranks in deciles). W&L recognized that my school doesn't weight and took this into consideration. Don't let the ~90% in the top 10% of class stat make you think you don't have a shot.

Hope this helps!

I agree with Morgan, to me considering HSC as an alternative to W&L is like considering the State University of New York system as an alternative to Columbia - money would be the only reason it makes sense.

my parents and i met with the HS college counselor and my advisor yesterday to go over gpa, testing results, etc. they think i have a shot at WLU so i will be visiting somehow at some time.
i've noticed you talk about Roanoke airport, but how close is richmond (we can get a cheap airfare to richmond and drive the remaining distance)?

i also have to fly to charlotte, nc to get a look at Davidson. the college counselor recommended it big time.

i have my doubts about a smaller college so I definitely have to visit both. My hs is way too small for my liking yet my friends who attend much larger schools would gladly trade places with me--the grass is always greener on the other side.

also, how many apps have been received this year? thanks

Richmond is about two and a half hours away down I-64.

Yep, hm I've never thought about flying to Richmond, only DC or Roanoke. Anyway, my school guidance counselor was an idiot. If you go to a public school, take everything she says with a grain of salt. W&L is as good as Davidson academically and anyone who goes to Davidson who visits their friends here wishes they came to W&L instead. Now, I never visited Davidson... I did apply but chose W&L instead, and don't regret it. That being said, I have a friend who goes to Davidson and she loves it.

Hampden-Sydney College has been providing an excellent liberal arts education to men since 1775.It is an all men's school. It is unique, great, and special.Only about four such schools remain in America-HSC,Wabash,Morehouse,and Deep Springs.
No comparison to any other school was intended when I mentioned HSC in a post. It's not coed.If one were chasing stats for a coed university/LAC-Harvard,Yale,Williams,Swartmore lead in the North; Davidson and Duke rule in the South.Plenty of emasculated wannabes follow.
Thousands of coed schools exist in America,as do very many all women's colleges.About five or so federal and state military academies exist.Of the four all men's schools left in the United States-one is all black and one is a two year college.
When virtually all the formerly all male colleges in America capitulated to the Zeitgeist and went coed, only four perdured in their mission of remaining all men.I do not know very much about three of them, but what I do know about HSC from visits and research I admire and respect deeply. The amazingly strong bond of brotherhood on campus and among the alumni, the warm friendliness of everyone I've encountered there, the unspeakably beautiful campus, the atmosphere of manners and centuries old traditions, the no nonsense liberal arts course load, the sports, the frats, what's not to love!
GO TIGERS!!!

That said, you cannot deny that by failing to follow W&L in going coed twenty years ago permanently destroyed HSC status as an academic competitor as W&L's standards skyrocketed with the addition of women.

Hi there im new here, and since its 99% that im going to WLU this fall (the 1% is for VISA and plane-accidents :D) i know its useless asking about the school...but stilll...:D
How is the library? Of course Ive seen some pics...but what about the accessability? the books? etc.?
Ive heard diversity at WLU is low T_T (im an intel) does it negatively affect the atmosphere there?
And the school is "famous" for Greek life right? as an intel i hardly know anything about it (tried to read but..well...) and have no intention of joining any...will it be like..."no society and you'll be alone"?

hey dima, can you tell me about W&L's riding team? I've been reading about it on the website for a while. I'm wondering if they have any pictures posted, do you know?

I am a finalist for the George Washington Honors Scholarship competition. I applied regular decision so I haven't yet heard whether or not I am actually accepted to the school itself. Does being a finalist pretty much guarantee admission?

The library is really good and has a lot books (and you can keep them for really long) and DVD's - that's about all I know about it, look it up on the web site.

Diversity has been rising every year and it certainly shows in the atmosphere. One problem we run into is that the intels segregate themselves from the american students a lot - don't do it, you'll enjoy your stay here more integrated.

Riding - Other than the website, which it seems you already have (athletics.wlu.edu/riding), I can't say I know much about - we're pretty good for a Div III team. It is not easy to get on as there a lot of girls who want to do it. That's about all I know, I don't do the whole horse thing - I'm from the big city.

kilo - yes, unless you do something really stupid like get expelled from high school or completely bomb your mid-year grades or make a drunk fool of yourself when you're here in late february. Just don't do that stuff and you're good - honors scholarship finalists are the top 10% or so of applicants.

Academics at Hampden-Sydney remain superb and solid. The school attracts great guys from fine families.Perhaps W&L might consider becoming an all women's school to enhance its "ranking".Both schools are great and do Virginia proud.GO TIGERS!!!

I hate to continue this argument but I will use one more post because what you just posted is ridiculous.

First, what is with this fine families thing? This is 21st century america - its long past time we stopped looking at what family youre born into.

Secondly, what I meant is not that women are smarter than guys but that if you allow both men and women in, it doubles your applicant pool - allowing you to pick only the very best.
