I have several questions about vassar
*Does the campus ever seem stifling? As a city girl, do you think i would adjust well?
* What is the partying/drug scene like?
* How is the music program? I want to participate in many ensembles and take lessons on flute and piano? How are the teachers for those and are there many classical music performances?

It's interesting, because I was trying to figure out why I was applying to Vassar for the why vassar question, and I realized I don't really know why. I just seem to feel as if the academics have a lot of what I want. However, at the same time, I was seriously considering taking it off my list because I don't know if it will have what I want socially and I feel as if I don't want to be so isolated. So what is Vassar's vibe?

Hi estargrl88, I'm a freshman at Vassar so I guess I can answer your questions.

The campus does get stifling when you stay on campus too long, but it's not hard to get off campus if you want to. There are shuttles that run to the mall every weekend, and the train station is a short distance away so a lot of people take that advantage to go to NYC once in a while. But most people choose not to get off campus often because there's always something interesting going on (shows, concerts...). I'm a city girl and I love it here so far, and I think the campus does provide a good environment to study.

Partying/drug scene: If you want it, you can get it. If you don't want it, it's absolutely cool. I haven't really been partying much and I haven't had alcohol since I arrived on campus, but there are alcohol parties every weekend so if you want to drink, it's very easy to get alcohol.

The music program is amazing. Vassar has the 2nd largest number of Steinway pianos anywhere in the world (besides the factory I think). There are piano practice rooms in the music hall. We have a lot of music lessons, but you need to audition for it. I'll probably try to get into a piano lesson next semester if I can, because where else can you get private lessons, and play on Steinway pianos for free? (free for ppl on financial aid, otherwise $350/semester I think). I don't know much about the music faculty but maybe I can ask my roommate or other people who're taking music lessons. Anyway Vassar is has a very artistic student body...almost everyone plays some instrument, and naturally people go to concerts on campus often.

Hope I answered your questions adequately and you should definitely come visit if you can!

awesome! thanks for answering my questions. speaking of financial aid, is it good?

Yes...I'm an international student and Vassar covered my 100% of my need.
