As a Canadian senior, I’m slightl confused by the American college application process. I have a few questions, and I hope someone in this forum can help me answer them.

How are reccomendation letters sent and must they be received by November 1st?

Is the online application to the university I’m applying to all I need to fill out in order to be done the appication process or is there additional information of some form I’m supposed to send in? I mean, people talk about selling themselves on resumes and all, so I’m wondering.

Are events such as performing at the Governor General’s Gala or at KD Lang’s concert worth mentioning or are they just too trifle to bother with?

Also, I’m wondering how people list all the awards that they’ve won seeing as I didn’t see any headings that told one to list awards.

I’d “really” appreciate it if someone could clariy things for me.

Must be postmarked by November 1st.

Yes...if you use the Common Application, there might be a supplement that must be filled out.

No..include them.

The listed awards are usually in the activities section...they give you space for positions and awards, although it's almost never enough space.

postmarked by whatever the admissions deadline is. november 1st for ED,

if it's the common app there should be a supplement section you can check. if it's just the colleges website, they'll probably tell you on the app they need additional, but check around on their website to be sure. and you need to have your test scores sent directly to the school.

definitely include the events.

Thanks a lot for the responses. They help. However, being the clueless aplicant that am, I have no idea what postmarked is. Can someone explain it? Oh , and what's a common app?

Common App:
Used by about 300 colleges. Allows you to fill out one application and then send it to as many colleges as you want (as long as they are Common App members). Some schools require a supplement in addition to the Common App. You can fill out this supplement on the Common App website.

Postmark: What IsleBoy said. Basically, whatever date you mail it on will be the date colleges see. If you mail it on November 1, the postmark is November 1-- this would meet a Nov. 1 postmark deadline. BUT, I recommend sending it at least a few days prior to the deadline, just to be safe.
