Quick chance to Wharton transfer? (just a quick general opinion)

I'm a freshman at the University of Miami with a nice scholarship.

Semester 1 GPA: 3.8
Semester 2 GPA: 3.4
SATs: 700V, 760M, 710W

+EXTREMELY good HS teacher and college prof recs.

What are my general chances?

i don’t think 3.6 is high enough for wharton, but you have a shot at transferring to higher ranked schools than U Miami, such as NYU Stern. wharton is a pretty small program with 500 per grade, and very few people leave the program, so transfer admissions are highly competitive, even for those with perfect 4.0’s.

^Agreed. Stern might be a low reach with your stats, also it has a pretty good rep, second in the nation for finance I believe? However, consider the $_$ as well. It is very hard to transfer to any “good” college, let alone to a place like Wharton. Apply though, you never know.

A 3.8 and then a 3.4 is not enough for Wharton. Students with 4.0s at top schools still cant make the cut in transferring. Maintain 4.0s until the end of sophmore and then apply for the best shot.

u would need a 3.8 to internally transfer, so a 3.6 wouldn’t do it for external

got it. thanks a lot for the responses!

what if I picked Penn CAS instead of Wharton? what are my chances then?

CAS is definitely easier for transfers, but I still believe a 3.7 is required to have a strong application. my buddy from Duke with a 3.69 was rejected last year, though other 3.7 students have had good results. i don’t think very many 3.6 people get in, but if you give it one more strong semester you could be at 3.7, at which point your transfer options will expand dramatically.

wow are they that strict about GPA? I did get 2 A+'s in financial classes. What about my SATs? How’s the strength of the transfer applicant pool?

They admitted 25 external transfers this fall. It seemed like most people I asked had between a 3.9-4.0. I transferred in with a 3.93 (although your GPA doesn’t carry over). BTW the admissions committee will not see your 2nd semester GPA in time for admissions decisions. It’s pretty much just your 1st semester college GPA (if you’re a freshman).
