When plugging numbers into several quick college cost estimators on various websites it has become apparent that while asking parents to submit the current value of their home they are suggesting using Zillow, and also providing a link to the Zillow website, to determine the value of their home.
Our own home is probably worth at least 30% less than the value given on Zillow. Indeed, I’d very much like to move out of this house and into the one described on Zillow.
By using the figure quoted on Zillow though it now looks like we have substantially more equity in our home than we actually do.
Any thoughts?
You don’t have to se Zillow. I was advised by an expert to value my home at the price I think I’d get if I had to sell it in 30 days, without doing any work on it or staging it for marketing purposes.
Thank you and phew! I was more than a bit surprised to see a link to Zillow on so many college websites. I’ve always found their estimates wildly optimistic.
