Quick easy chance question!

I go to a public school in CA that was ranked the 317th best high school in America by Newsweek. I was just wondering, where does that put my school in terms of status (like...is it considered crappy? average? above average?)...I'm asking this in terms of what a college will think of my school. Will they think that since my school isn't ranked very high, the fact that I got straight A's with APs and honors classes isn't worth much? Will this hurt my chances when applying to colleges? (My dream colleges are HPYMS...)

Sorry if this was a confusing post, I wasn't sure how to word my question quite right.....haha sorry.

Basically what I'm asking is will a college consider my school good/average/bad/etc?

Thanks. (:

The school plays a role, but with straight As in APs and honors classes, you will be a competitive applicant to HPYMS with good SAT scores (2250+) and strong extracurriculars. It doesn’t matter what a college thinks about your school, it matters what they think about you the applicant. Good luck!

DoubleABattery, thank you for the clarification!

I know people who go to HYPSM from unranked public schools so its a benefit that your school is ranked.

Depends… I think its actually better to get straight As and maybe a 4.7GPA from a mediocre school going out as a valedictorian, than say… 3.7 unweighted and 4.4 weighted GPA from a top public school only leaving making into top 20% of your class.
