Quick essay question!

I have a feeling my essay may be a little frivolous. It’s not absurd or anything, but it’s not super, duper formal. If I read it out loud, it literally almost sounds like someone saying something (like conversational speech), so it’s pretty lax. Is this bad? I don’t have any big words and I don’t anticipate putting any in my essay, and the style isn’t upper-class eloquent, but is still grammatically correct. I’m afraid it may not be formal enough. Help!

That's perfect! It's you. This is a personal statement, not a dissertation. If your personality shines with informality, send informality. Formal makes a lot of people sound like boring bookworm wanna-bes.

i agree, but more so with the page 217 than the why penn. the biggest word in my essay is supine (sad...don't ask). don't feel bad about being "normal" ;)

My pg. 217 essay shifts from a narrative type thing to basically speaking directly to the audience. I do this to elaborate on the little story (narrative part). Is this okay?

dont worry about it! in fact when i applied to penn two years back, mine sounded similar to what you described. if you'ld like, you can message me on this site and we could talk over any parts you're uncertain about. dont worry about it!

What you are describing can be the best kind of essay. Just be sure that you "show" more than you "tell". For example, in the descriptive part, I would go very light on comments like, "I am diligent, determined, curious, a risk taker etc. " but, rather, show through the development of your story all of those traits.

anectdote > adjective

I'm pretty satisfied with my pg. 217 essay now, but if I can find the time, I might change my ending. It just seems kinda weird. Now all I have to do is figure out a better way to construct my Why Penn essay!

i quite like my p217.
there are still some little bits i need to improve but overall i like it.
i made it look more like a page, so it ends with half a sentence but it doesnt really relevent to the main idea. =)
