quick essay question

Since the most people seem to be on this board now, and I need a quick response:

I wrote an essay for the University of Chicago that I loved. It was done about three weeks ago and I inputted it into the sight then. However, I realized that it was probably one of the best essays that I would write and began furiously trying to chop words so that I could use it as a personal statement. I just previewed my Chicago app and somehow they got the chopped version, so I'm email my regional adcom but I'm just so paranoid about screwing up...does this sound okay?

I just looked at my application and discovered a minor problem. I had finished my essay about three weeks ago, and put it into the website then. After that, because I loved the essay so much, I tried to create a chopped down version, which I don't like nearly as much. Somehow that ended up getting submitted. Is there any way that I can mail the longer essay to you or email it or something? I'm so sorry to create this inconvenience. Thanks.

I know they pride themselves on being unique so I don't want to sound like I'm making their essay generic. Thanks a lot!

anyone have advice?

It's worth a try but I don't know how successful you will be in reinstating the longer version. If they made an exception for you, they would have to do that for everyone who is late with their application.

I also wouldn't have used the words 'chopped down version'. I would have replaced the following sentence:
"After that, because I loved the essay so much, I tried to create a chopped down version, which I don't like nearly as much. "

With:
'The final version of my essay I inadvertently sent to U Chicago is an abbreviated version of the original; I liked the longer version much better than this one. I'd appreciate it if you would let me reinstate the longer version that I am sending with this email (or letter if you are sending by snail-mail). Thanking you, (etc..)'

I just changed it to wrong draft...Chicago does have this whole elaborate thing about how they will actually accept late applications, so I guess it's worth a try...
