The financial aid officer at UT told me to file the FAFSA as soon as possible after Jan 1 because funds are disbursed on a first-come-first-served basis. Since 2006 taxes have not been filed yet, she said to use 2005 numbers and then edit it later. Well, I just filed the FAFSA for 2006-07 school year, thinking that I could then edit it for the next year. But, I cannot resubmit it for 2007-08 using the 2005 numbers, so how would I 'get in line' until I have my 2006 numbers? I don't know what she meant by filing it now and then editing it later. It just gave the option to submit, and I wouldn't want to submit it with the wrong numbers.

I am a little confused by your question. Did you file the numbers using the 2006/2007 form? Why? Are you looking for summer aid - I thought that was the only reason to file 2006/7 form at this point. If the 2007/2008 form will not let you use the same exact numbers (I don't know anything about that) just change them a little or put your best estimate numbers. That is what I have been told to do. Then submit it and go back and correct it when you have actual numbers.

It is OK to do this. They realise many people will not have their taxes done yet. They will give you a financial offer but will not actually pay out any $$$s till the correct numbers are submitted.

(I tried to edit my above post to add this but it won't let me save the edit)

My intention was to file for 2007-08, as my son is only attending part-time this year so we wouldn't qualify for any aid anyway. But, since I didn't know whether to put the 2005 numbers in, I went ahead and just filed the 2006-07 with the right numbers, thinking that I could then use it as a template for 2007-08.

So, you are saying that it's ok to go ahead and file 2007-08 using the 2005 numbers, and that will secure our place in line, and I can fill in the right numbers later? Great, I will do that. I didn't want to get in trouble with using the wrong numbers, so I am glad to hear that this is normal. Thanks!

If there is any likelihood your 2006 number will be lower than your 2005 numbers try and reflect this in your estimates. From everything I have read it is easier to get your aid package reduced than to have it increased later as funds may be depleted.

Ah, very good advice! It actually might be, so thanks very much!

I think that you can edit the FAFSA after your initial submission is accepted and the EFC is calculated. Then you may edit your original submission.

Ah, that's correct. I just did it. I found the option for entering a new FAFSA based on a previously submitted one, and it said that the 2006 figures could be estimates, so I entered estimates and then submitted it.
Thanks, everyone!
