quick gpa sat question

i know that being admitted is so much more than just gpa sat, but i was wondering what is the range that would keep you competitive in the applicant pool. i know you should aim for the best you can get, but out of curiosity what is a range of gpa and range of sat that would keep you competitive?

2110 and a 3.75-4.0 with tough classes are near the avg.

thanks..do you go to NU?

yep, gonna be a junior...also remember though, when applying, that different schools are more and less compet than each other, some schools dont weight honors classes, etc. These scores and grades are simply a guide. My ACT score was two points lower than the schools avg but a strong gpa and ec helped me out. Well rounded apps are a big deal here which is why you might hear of some bright people, like the salutatorian at my school with a much higher act score get waitlisted, etc. He didnt do shi*
beyond school. Hope my vulgar posting helps. if you have any specific q's just let me know.

don't forget Class Rank as well...also if you have subject strengths then take and submit good SAT2's and apply as that major (eg, strong verbal, writing, lit...but maybe weak math: apply as an english major)

would being in the top 10% be ok for NU? also what sat II scores shoudl i goal for..i assume 700+, but how many? what was your hs gpa sat?

SAT VS. ACT--I'm planning on taking both, but I wanted to know what the best ways are to study for each. I already have the blue book for SAT which is helpful and a tutor..but ACT?

i'm also really nervous with my AP tests so far..i go 2 three's and i really don't know why..euro and human geography..by the end of high school i will have done like 10-11 ap's so i know i won't get 3's on all of them..but how much of being admitted is about the AP scores...can they be a big factor..or is to more of a small factor if your close? Will being in the top 10% instaed of like top 20 people really hurt my chances that bad?

top 10% is fine. gpa was 3.8, class rank top 15%, sat 1450 (1999 test), sat2s 780Writ 760 lit 660 math....had great ec/recs...got in regular decision, applied as an english major. definitely go for it. SAT2s? you should report as many as you do well in...700+. highlight leadership and unique ECs...if you have special skills (sports, debate) don't hesitate to reach out to those respective coaches.

if i get A's the rest of HS then i will probably have a 3.8, but worst case scenario i'll probably have a 3.75 if i don't ace out the rest...would my chances still be good? i mean i am going to study hard and have a tutor for sat's and i'm hoping for 1420-1450 at least...but my leadership activities by the end of HS will be national honor society, spanish honor and science honor society. treasurer/secretary of math club and page editor of school newspaper..i will have about 400 comm. srv. hours probably around 380 or so....also i started my own foundation for childhood leukemia that i raise as much money as possible for the cause...

I got in the class of 2010 with the following:
GPA: 3.991 (all AP/IB/Honors classes)
ACT: 31
SAT: 2030

I also had some really strong EC's though and letters of rec (or atleast I thought that those were some of the stronger pts on my app.)

Oh, btw, i'm in Weinberg.

sratman....focus on the foundation that you started...that could be a big one if you work it right. (founded and led a cancer foundation that raised $X over X events)

I agree, your stats are right where they are expected to be for applicants...but you need to stress those aspects that differentiate yourself form others and that make your more rounded than others.

"would being in the top 10% be ok for NU? "

lol, being in the top 10% is ok for anywhere.

"I got in the class of 2010 with the following:
GPA: 3.991 (all AP/IB/Honors classes)"

was that unweighted? that's a really good gpa if so, heh.

yeah sratman you sound fine, i transferred to northwestern with about a 3.76 or so, granted college gpas are deflated, a 3.75 from high school with all your ECs and a 1450 is good, you have a good shot, especially ED.

I can't stress this enough, if NU is your first choice school, and you're a "typical" candidate, apply ED, your chances are much better.

thanks for the replies..
i don't believe i have posted my stats anywhere yet..
i'm a junior now and i can post what i think i will have

gpa: 3.75 UW
top 10%
secretary/treasurer math club, spanish club, spanish NHS, NHS, page editor for my school newspaper
SAT: i'm expecting at least a 1400..how would that be for NU?

my first choice is dartmouth (pending that i raise my gpa to about 3.77-3.8 and get a 1450 on my SAT so i am most likely applying there ED..
but definitely NU RD
what are my chances with a 1400 and 3.75 because i believe those are the lowest #'s i would have..?

ooo sorry i did post my stats....

I got in with IB Diploma unweighted GPA 3.67, with SAT 2240 (m800 v730 w710). Unweighted rank was 88/370 (we don't have weighted, which is ultraretarded), but I'm going to the best college from my class lol. Excluding a west point and curtis institute of music, but that's different :-P. My Essays, ECs and my interview were also pretty awesome.

I got in with both poor grades and AP scores, so don't be discouraged, just compensate by being really original on your essays. I had a 1430/2130 SAT, 3.6 GPA, and almost all 3's on my APs.
