Quick Grammar/CR Questions

Could you guys help me on a few questions?

1)Mediators were standing by, prepared to intervene in the labor dispute even though both sides had refused earlier offers for assistance. No error

2) Although the editors were reputed to be very selective, the uneven quality of the material they put into the anthology suggests they were too inclusive. Could someone explain what this sentence means? I don't get the "uneven quality" part.

3) Indicating their desire to extend free enterprise, Canadian elected a member of the Progressive Conservative Part, Kim Campbell, as Prime Minister in 1993.

That was the correct answer but why is this one wrong "Kim Campbell of the Progressive Conservative Party was elected Prime Minister of Canada?

1-- What are you asking about here?

2-- “uneven quality” means that the stuff the editors put into the final piece was not up to all the same high standards, I guess.

3-- I think there should be commas between “Campbell” and “of,” and again between “Party” and “was.”

1) no error

2) uneven quality simply means the works in the anthology were both high quality and low quality. it basically means: “Although the editors were reputed to be very selective, the face that they included both high quality and low quality works in the anthology suggests they were too inclusive.”

3) the first underlined word should be “Canadians” not “Canadian.” This choice is correct because the phrase “Indicating their desire to extend free enterprise” must modify the first word that comes after it. Kim Campbell did not indicate THEIR desire. Canadians indicated THEIR desire.

EDIT: come to think of it, question one may have an error because it should be offers of assistance. but im not sure.

I believe 1 does have an idiomatic error, as it is offers “of” assistance"

1 is “of” assistance. not “for.” This is also discussed in the writing thread and is 100% certain.

2 uneven quality means works of all quality ranges were included. Ranged from being bad to being good.

3 The introductory phrase (or watever it’s grammatically called) modifies Canada, not the prime minister.

what;s the answer for number 2??
no error??

The second one is a CR sentence completion question I believe.

1) “for” is unidiomatic. It should be “offers of”.

2) This is a SC (it might help people if you listed the answer choices). The fact that the editors are selective suggests that all the material they select will be of a similar quality. However, since it turns out there’s all sorts of different quality material in the anthology, the fact is that the editors included too much stuff without really choosing based on quality.

3) Again, the people are the ones indicating their desire, not the Prime Minister. So “Canadians” must immediately follow “Indicating their desire to extend free enterprise”.
