Well, i didn't get into my first choice, princeton (no surprise). I really want to get a BA in music from a school that's known for composition. Right now I've got Rice, which doesn't offer a BA, Cornell which is too close for me and i guess is only okay for composition, and oberlin, which is a little too strange for me.

So, please...I'd like to know if there's another school that I should apply to. I know U Chicago is great, but it's also kinda boring seeming. Give me a list of schools like this with BA programs. Does Northwestern have one? Are places like UPenn or some of the top lacs worth a look at?

Sorry to freak out, but there's really very little time for applying to more colleges and I just want to end up at a place that I can major in the thing i want. I should have somewhat of a chance at any school you suggest, and higher up schools all around are preferred, in case i decide not to do music.

Edit: i'll also take international schools...well...Canadian, at least.

My son has a good friend (Juilliard grad) who is getting his master's at Indiana. Don't know a thing about the program, but would assume it's pretty good, since this kid is amazing.

LOTS of schools offer a BA in music with the opportunity to study composition; obviously, strength in composition is harder to come by.
Here are a few I'd look at in your position (I don't know your stats, but I'll work on the assumption that Princeton was a realistic possibility)
Chicago
Yale
Harvard
MIT (actually a BS in music... but Harbison is there)
Stanford
Berkeley
Bard
Penn
Brandeis

Yale would be lovely, but it is a little silly of me to think getting into Yale would be a huge break from getting into Princeton.

I'm thinkin' Penn might be worth it. Maybe I will end up trying for Yale. Thanks for that list, though. It really helps. Do you think Duke should be on it?

Brown is great for electronic music and ethnomusicology. I hear the BA in music is also very strong on the cultural history/aesthetics/hermeneutics front, but very weak in both composition and performance.

So just out of curiosity, can anyone tell me for definite how good Cornell is at composition?? I already applied there and I think I have a very good shot at getting in.

I hate to ask a "fresh" question to the OP...but...Did you not have some applications for other schools ready to put in the mail just in case you didn't get accepted ED to Princeton? I know it's late to be asking that now...but perhaps someone will read this thread and know that usually this is suggested. Students who are applying ED should have other applications ready to send. That way, the "research" would already have been done, and the applications underway...much easier and more timely than doing so after an ED deferral or rejection. Having said that...you have gotten some good suggestions from others on this forum. My only suggestion...add one school to your list where your acceptance would be most likely (i.e. not in the Brown/Yale group).

I did have all my applications done, but...i dunno, i guess i suddenly realized none of the schools i applied to were really "perfect" because I couldn't get the degree I just recently decided i wanted to get (well, i can get a BA in music from some schools, but they might not be that awesome at composition). Oh well, I can always just get a masters in music or transfer or whatever.

So here's where I ended up applying:
Princeton (won't get in), Yale (definitely won't get in, but i like it more than Penn anyway), Rice, Cornell, Rochester, Oberlin, and a public safety.

Incidently...if nobody knows how cornell is, how about rochester (not eastman) for composition??
