quick help... "resigned" as a club president

Hello, in grade 10 I won a position to be the president of a club. Normally I would continue to be president until I graduate unless someone else expresses interest in being president then a re-election is held. However, in grade 11 I had too much on my hands and realized I was no longer interested in the club and resigned my position as a club president. The vice-president then became president and all other positions were re-elected. However I remained secretary of the club in grades 11 and 12.

So how badly does it hurt me if I was only president for that one year, and went down to a lower position in the years after?? I know colleges like consistency so I am concerned. I am applying to top liberal arts colleges and some of the Ivy Leagues.

Thank you.

This is a minute part of your application and isn’t going to make the difference in your decision. Think about it, your grades & test scores are the most important. Then come things like LORs, essays and ECs. And the difference between pres and sec for a couple of years of a HS club is not going to tip the balance.

Unless you point out to them that clubs at your school have a “president for life” rule, I can’t imagine it would be an issue. School clubs in my area re-elect all positions every year.

It will matter for the .2 seconds the reader scans that line in your EC column. Really.

relax — it’s fine.
