i got into PLME regular, and before I applied, i thought it was non-binding in the sense that we could apply/be admitted to other med. schools should we choose not to continue on the Brown’s med. school. But when I checked the PLME website, it said it is an 8yr. continuum. Is this right? Does that mean if we choose PLME then we HAVE to go on to Brown med. school?

it's my understanding that if you go PLME you have to go to brown's med school...

but im pretty sure if you're accepted to PLME then you are also accepted as a brown student... as in, you could choose not to go PLME.

you can go pre-med at Brown and not be PLME. in fact, the only difference between a PLME and a premed student is that PLME students never have to take the MCATZ and premed students do.

I am NOT certain however whether you can 'save' a spot at brown med school and apply to other places if you are PLME, although I'd doubt it (just sounds like too much of a sweet deal, but i dunno, PLME is pretty sweet itself).

hope that helps

with PLME you can bolt brown whenever you want, many students apply out to other med schools, thats part of the freedom the program offers you. so in a sense you're not really bound to anything

I think part of the issue is that you don't have to take the SAME pre-med courses as a PLME student that you would if you were normal pre-med, meaning that unless you did it on your own, you might not be qualified (in the same way as other candidates) to apply to other med schools. But you could definitely fill in any gaps in coursework separately from the program.

According to the PLME website: "Note: Students who expect to apply to other medical schools should not apply to the PLME which is an eight-year educational continuum."

They try to discourage kids who just want to do a prestigeous pre-med program and then leave to go somewhere else. However, I do not believe that it is actually binding.

So if you were to go thru with PLME but choose to apply to another med school instead but end up deciding to go to Brown's Med School instead, will Brown's Med School still allow you to attend it?

Yes I guess so.

i know a plme at harvard law, still holding his spot at brown med. he might actually come back, but few expect him too. the point is, they are very lenient

although, i just have to go ahead and say it... if youre already thinking about leaving plme, why did you apply in the first place? it's supposed to be an 8-year-program.

seems a bit rude.

because most people apply to plme knowing they stand very little chance of actually getting it......you only think about a program seriously if you actually get it or are close to getting it (like interviewing or something). otherwise, you're wasting brain power.

and if you were making a commitment like this, wouldn't you like to know the extent of it?

If I decide to go for PLME, I'm definitely thinking of continuing on to Brown med. school. I was just asking IN CASE something happens (i.e. my parents decide that they want me near our hometown for med. school cause they're getting old, etc. or something else happens) ^_^

Cyris,
I wasn't thinking about leaving. I was just wondering about the outlines of this program. That's all.
