Boston University into the School of management or Umich as potential ross after 1st year (LSA for now).??

which would be a better choice?

Boston University into the School of management or Umich as potential ross after 1st year (LSA for now).??

which would be a better choice?

Do you live in Michigan?

you’re probably better off at mich. unless you have your heart completely set on studying the subject matter of business.

I think Michigan would be a better choice even if you don’t get into Ross because of its good economics program.

i live in ny, so out of state tuition no matter what…

city school v college town…have you visited? which do you prefer?..

I’d say Michigan definitely if you can afford it.

are you freakin kidding me? BU? really?

i can def afford both i have visited michigan not BU tho

ANOTHER QUESTION

Q. University of Michigan vs University of Virginia

Status: OOS for both
Intended Major: Economics

Which one do I have to choose?

Michigan, without a doubt. The only thing that BU has going for it is that it is located in Boston (at least, when comparing UMich and BU). Michigan trumps BU in nearly everything else.

Daughter is majoring in econ at BU, best kept secret is US News rated #9 in econ last year. Great location if you like the city. Have you visited the campus? Commonwealth Ave runs right down middle of campus, so really the city is the campus. BU beach is on Charles River. Good luck.

BU, only because Boston >>> Ann Arbor

For everything else, UM wins

Boston>>>Ann Arbor. Yeah, if you want to get mugged! You can’t compare the two cities that way. They are very different.

For overall academics:
Michigan >> BU

Business:
Michigan >> BU

Economics:
Michigan > BU

Professional Placement:
Ross > Michigan Econ = BU Finance

Campus Environment:
Michigan >>> BU

Surrounding areas:
Depends on preference. If one likes a quaint, vibrant and intellectual community, Ann Arbor is unbeatable. If one prefers a nice, large city and urban environment, Boston has more to offer than Ann Arbor. One should remember that the Detroit suburbs, which are located 45 miles from Ann Arbor, offer the amenities of any great city, including a very diverse and active night life, excellent clubs, an awesome concert scene, the 5th largest collection of art in the nation, some of the nicest malls, awesome professional sports teams (Red Wings and Pistons) good restaurants and one of the most convenient and well-connected airports in North America. Personally, I always felt that Ann Arbor had everything one could want…and more. However, for those who really crave large-city amenities, Ann Arbor is a short drive (less than an hour by car) away from such offerings.

Cost of Attendance:
I realize the OP said money wasn’t an object, but Michigan is $8,000/year cheaper than BU for Freshmen and Sophomores and $5,000/year cheaper for Juniors and Seniors. Over four years, that’s a $26,000 difference. Certainly something worth considering.

http://www.bu.edu/finaid/cost/index.html

http://www.finaid.umich.edu/Financial_Aid_Basics/cost.asp

I agree with all of the above except
“Campus Environment:
Michigan >>> BU”

I would rather be in NYC’s little brother than in the middle of nowhere.

Let’s just dissect what you said…

offer the amenities of any great city
hmm not really… Please tell me you are kidding. Ann Arbor is barely a city. I have lived in NY, LA, HK and Tokyo for extended period of my life and Ann Arbor cant match 5% of what the aforementioned cities have to offer.

including a very diverse and active night life
the quality of night life in ann arbor is really not great

excellent clubs
hell no…

an awesome concert scene
Maybe…

the 5th largest collection of art in the nation
And? I think art should be measured by quality (or $ worth) , not quantity

some of the nicest malls
You mean briarwood mall? really? lol? Malls in Ann Arbor can’t even hold a candle to the decent malls in the state like the somerset collection or twelve oaks…let alone the nice shopping malls in NY. They are really not comparable.

Awesome professional sports teams (Red Wings and Pistons)
Boston has the Sox, the Pats and the Celtics… aka way more relevant sports teams…

Good restaurants
Nuh-uh…

and one of the most convenient and well-connected airports in North America.
Yes. DTW is great.

That said, Michigan hands down

“Awesome professional sports teams (Red Wings and Pistons)
Boston has the Sox, the Pats and the Celtics… aka way more relevant sports teams…”

Detroit has consistently been ranked among the best sports cities in the country.

“some of the nicest malls
You mean briarwood mall? really? lol?”

Bearcats, there are Somerset Collection and Twelve Oaks Mall in the Detroit suburbs. I would be very surprised if you haven’t visited both malls.

that’s not in ann arbor … btw I was just talking about them… in my edit lol

EDIT:
oh sorry I misread alexandre’s post, I didnt realize he was referring to the detroit suburbs, which WOULD include somerset and twelve oaks… but for the record, even somerset cant hold a candle to any relatively nice malls in NY, or even the galleria in houston

"‘Awesome professional sports teams (Red Wings and Pistons)
Boston has the Sox, the Pats and the Celtics… aka way more relevant sports teams…’

Detroit has consistently been ranked among the best sports cities in the country."

That’s irrelevant. Most people in the nation would find the package of Sox + Pats + Celtics more relevant than Red Wings, Pistons…and dare I say the Lions + Tigers.
Sox >> Tigers …afterall Red Sox/Yankees is the only rivalry definitely bigger than Michigan/Ohio State… UNC/Duke can shut up
Pats>>>>>>>>>>> Lions… lol need to say more?
Celtics >>>> Pistons …
Hockey’s relevance is regional

bearcats, Somerset is as nice as any mall I have been to, and I have been to most of the nice malls in NYC, as well as Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates. I have honestly never been to a nicer Mall than Somerset.

dude you have to be kidding. I have been to Dubai Mall too and please tell me you are kidding when you say Somerset is as nice as the Dubai Mall… unless we have a different metric for “nice malls”

Anyway, somerset is an hour away from ann arbor. Not exactly awfully accessible to Michigan students without a car anyway.
