Quick Q: Is the opt. essay personal or academic?

Should it be more about a non academic subject (that elaborates on your personality) or should it be about how good you are a chess grandmaster or the awesome churches you built in uganda?

um, it should be on anything you want it to be. that's why it's optional - you're given the choice to write anything you want on there to describe yourself in more detail

Hey, do you guys think it is okay to have one of the shorter 250 word essays be a longer optional essay?

what optional essay? how come I see no optional essay? Isn't it just 3 essays? Where does it say on the Princeton app (page#, section)???

well, it's not exactly oppotional essay. It's opptional additional information about urself, and everyone writes an essay for that part :)

Hey, how far over the 250 word limit is ok? Is 400 words way too high? I'm laboring intensely to try to cut it down...but in vain! lol

well, no limit is mentioned so I think even 500 is OK

Oh, I meant the required 250 word essays (2). Thanks though!

wait, am I really that thick? Where's the "optional additional information about yourself" section? Is my app missing some pages or what?!

It's an additional page that says "Optional: What else would you like us to know?" or something like that. You can download it if you can't find it. There was also an optional recommendation form by the way.

The word limit for the 250 word essay? My essay lengths are as follows: 340, 500, 510, 570. So I'm screwed, and there's nothing I can do about it. I really have no idea I'm going to cut down two of the essays to 250. Each essay has 4-5 paragraphs, so cutting down, I would lose a lot of substance and not just fluff...although you can see from the length of this post that I don't write very concisely...

LOL suburbian...I have the same trouble. I got mine down to like 390 for both...but that is the bottom line...I cannot cut it down further without continuing to lose valuable information/substance. Are you just going to send it in like that then? I think I have no choice.

I didn't write an essay for the part. All I did was elaborate on some EC's and list some interesting aspects of my life.

You don't have to write an essay.

i doubt they even want you to

do you even have to include some additional info? What if u didn't write anything for the optional?

For my optional part, I hand-wrote some of my favorite / most meaningful quotes from books that I've read. I wanted to hand write it because everything else was done on a computer.

do you think its ok if i make an activity resume be the optional "essay?"

well, I just think you should write instead of list:

-

-
.....

For my part, I kind of take risk. I can't call my 'essay' an essay. It's like I'm talking face to face to the adcoms. And I put it very clearly, absolutely no subtle at all: Please, admit me to Princeton. Can you believe that? I know I'm out of my mind.

I'm applying for AFS Awards for Excellence Scholarship, and while applying for a scholarshipa and applying to college are two different things, AFS encourages the applicants to write an optional "letter to the judges."

beethoven,
one was cut from 700s to 340, another from 700s to 500, so I doubt I can do much with those, so I'll try to cut down the other two.
