The applications asks “If you are interested in one or more of the following academic areas (Chemistry/Computer Science/Geology/Mathematics/Physics ) at Brown, we would like to know a bit more about you.”

If my intended concentration is Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, do I still have to answer these questions? Any help or advice is very much appreciated! :)

This question gets asked every year, and Brown has never been crystal clear about this. My take: Since “biochemistry” is not “chemistry,” and the Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry department falls under the Division of Biology and Medicine, the answer is no, you don’t need to write this essay.

The science supplement gets sent to faculty in those specific academic areas for reading. Since biochem isn’t on that list, biology department profs aren’t involved in this aspect of the admissions process. (They do read PLME applications, though.)

The biophysics concentration is likewise under the department of Biology and Medicine, not Physics. I wouldn’t think the essay is necessary. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t do it; if you feel as though you have something important to say about your interest in these subjects, then do so by all means.
